Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students regularly liken Bryn Mawr to a sorority. We are all girls, and we rely heavily on formal Traditions held throughout the year. Though we have no Greek social system, Traditions are a cherished part of Bryn Mawr life. Traditions only govern social life to the extent that they bring classes together for song, celebration, and ceremony four times during the school year. As the first three Traditions are designed to welcome women to Bryn Mawr, everyone is strongly encouraged to participate. The decision to not participate is respected, although the desire to include everyone is so strong that the Office of Residential Life and some students developed alternative activities during some Traditions.

For real Greek life like you see on MTV, you’ll have to go elsewhere, but you can attend Bryn Mawr and still go to frat parties at nearby Swarthmore and Villanova. Students who do this are lukewarm about their experiences, but many freshmen take the Swat Van a few times each fall.

Instead of sororities, we have...

Instead of sororities, we have Traditions, which, in a way, create one giant, all-inclusive sorority out of the entire student body. Traditions are wonderful and bring the college together in a way that nothing else can. They make new students feel included and loved from their first day here. At the end of the year, May Day provides a way for seniors to say goodbye before their actual graduation, which is really more for the benefit of the parents. Mawrters keep their lanterns their entire lives, and the most diehard atheists among us will still leave offerings at the statue of Athena for help in times of need.

Traditions are one thing about BMC...

Traditions are one thing about BMC I wish I had known more about before making my decision—not that it is a bad thing. I just did not know it played as big a role in the student community as it does. The different Traditions seem to come at perfect times, because they are great reasons to try and forget about work, while bringing the campus together to bond. It is not as corny as it sounds, but it makes me feel good and remember another reason I am happy to be at Bryn Mawr.
