Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Some students feel that the “little bit of everything” aspect of Bryn Mawr’s location results in a whole lot of nothing. Philly is too far, Bryn Mawr and the Main Line too suburban, and all the colleges in the area are too wrapped up in their own scenes, making them available but not welcoming. When students overcome the shortcomings, they find that what the area does offer can make for some good diversion from the work and stress that goes along with being a college student. Bryn Mawr has the essentials, including Acme for grocery shopping and TLA for a better-than-Blockbuster selection of DVDs and videos. Students love Milkboy Café for coffee and music, and some students perform during open-mic nights.

The Tri-College Community easily offers enough entertainment and social events for every night of the week, but some students have trouble finding the time to take advantage, especially when social interactions between the schools are said to be strained. Mawrters tend to look towards Philly for art, food, and drink, with a common daytime excursion including a trip to the art museum, a walk through downtown Philly, a little shopping at the Center City Mall, and dinner at Penang, a favorite restaurant in China Town. Evening trips might include First Friday, when old city galleries open late and street performers abound, or a visit to Penn’s campus for a party. Most freshmen spend at least one Saturday night wandering South Street.

Bryn Mawr Township

Small town, but cute and places to go. Other schools are really close by so there is always something going on.

The Best of Small Town and Big City

The town of Bryn Mawr is adorable and quite small but between it and the surrounding suburbs you can find anything you need. The immediate environment is beautiful -- tree lined streets with beautiful houses and several colleges right next door. However, I'm a city kid through and through, so one of my favorite things about Bryn Mawr's location is its proximity to Philadelphia. It's a 20 minute train ride there which is super convenient, and Philly literally has everything. Visit South Street if you get the chance! It's where all the cool shops are. The only drawback is that it costs about $10 round trip, so if you're poor it can limit how often you get downtown. But then again if you want to stick close to home, between Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore there are always things happening that you can get to for free. It also feels very safe. I walk all over Bryn Mawr at whatever time of night alone and don't feel unsafe, which is nice. Also go to Milkboy! It's the local coffee shop. It's a great place to study only a five minute walk from campus.

Much for Mawrters

Bryn Mawr is a small community where everyone is likely to know everyone. In fact, we are one big college community; down the road is Harcum College, Rosemont College, Haverford College, Cabrini College, and Villanova University. If you've been to Bryn Mawr, you've probably been to Hope's Cookies or Starbucks just two minutes away!!!
