Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Bucknell’s academic community truly is a community. Students and professors constantly interact with one another in and outside of the classroom. If you’re looking for a more intimate college atmosphere, Bucknell is a great school for you. Classes are small, so students have a voice and can express themselves during lectures and discussions. The majority of the professors really do love their jobs and are committed to helping students. All professors hold office hours a couple of days per week, and students can drop by with any questions they may have. Often times, students will contact professors via e-mail to set up meetings outside of office hours. When a professor is passionate about the subject and about teaching, she can make even a biology class interesting for a science- and math-hating English major. The workload at Bucknell is definitely manageable, although engineers seem to have a heavier course load than other majors. Many students are involved in other activities besides just academics. The key to balancing it all is just time management.

Students learn quickly that the distractions of online conversations, roommates, and loud dorms can prevent them from getting all of their studying done. Fortunately, Bucknell has a massive library with desks, group tables, private study-group rooms, couches, and beanbag chairs. Something that sets Bucknell apart from many of the nation’s other top universities is the fact that many Bucknellians find a balance between their studies and their social life. Most other schools are either described as workaholic schools or party schools; at Bucknell, there is a great balance that allows students to excel academically, graduate with a degree from a top university, and have a great time doing so.

Lots of Classes, Strong Relationships With Profs

The bottom line at Bucknell is that you get what you put into it. If you put a lot in, you'll find yourself getting almost overwhelmed with what you get out - a little bit of effort goes a long way. Show up late, go out every night, and live to party - it'll show, and it'll show quickly. Profs will notice, your grades will slide, and before you know it your GPA will begin a steady decline. The academics are difficult, but they are extremely rewarding, and I highly recommend the classes, the professors, and both the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering to anyone who is interested in a strong, well-rounded liberal arts education (engineers included!).

Great Profs, Small Classes

Engineering at Bucknell is amazing, and I'm obviously a bit partial to computer engineering...the classes are small and interactive, and the material is challenging to say the least, but it's entirely manageable if you have good time management skills. I'd say there's roughly 2 - 5 hours of homework per week per class (in the College of Engineering; math and sciences are maybe 3 - 6 depending on prof), but the profs are great about holding regular office hours for help. Some are more accessible than others (some *choose* to be more accessible than others), but the bottom line is that if you're really struggling, you can find help somewhere. At the end of the day, the profs are what truly make the major shine.

The Professors Are Amazing

You can literally pop into a professors "office hours" for anything at all. They're so helpful and very very available for extra help. The academics are very difficult but if you utilize their help, you'll do great.
