College Prowler Take
Bucknell has a point system to punish students for illegal behavior. Once a certain number of points are amassed, the student will face consequences, and if a student gets 10 points, he is kicked off campus for a semester. In the past, this system has worked well for students and administration. It’s a system that accepts the fact that underage college students are going to drink, so when an underage student is caught with a drink, he might get one or two points. It’s when students drink and drive, drink to the point of passing out, or continue to amass points that they can face suspension or expulsion. Once a student accumulates a certain number of points they are not allowed to participate in certain activities, such as living off campus. Each semester, students who have acquired points are given an opportunity to lose one of their points by attending a drunk driving presentation, so if you are unlucky enough to accumulate points, it is relatively easy to have them reduced over the years. In general, students feel that Bucknell is too strict when it comes to alcohol. For the most part though, most students will not get caught unless they are stumbling around campus or being loud. When students drink in their dorm rooms they run the risk of being caught by the RA, which is especially true in freshman halls where the RAs are not as lenient. Drug abuse is handed directly over to the Lewisburg Police Department, so the Bucknell administration does not have much to do with that. Bucknell Public Safety and the points system exist at Bucknell to keep students safe. However, the majority of students are adults, and therefore, they should be able to handle themselves as such. The cops are strict and fail to recognize that some drinking occurs at almost every college—they need to lighten up a little!

We have a point system, and you will be punished if you get caught, but Bucknell stresses intelligence and that includes partying smart. If you don't do anything stupid, Public Safety will leave you alone. And the only offenses that gets you kicked off campus the first time are driving drunk or getting violent while intoxicated—both with good reason.

Public Safety can be a help or a hindrance—it's what you make of it. The administration pushes PS to crack down, but the bottom line is if you are smart about it and don't put them in a position where they need to take action, they'll leave you alone.

Public Safety (PS) is cracking down due to pressure from the University. However, their first response isn't to bust you. They usually try to help first, it's just that some people are morons and put PS in a position where they don't have any choice but to take action.

For the most part, the campus is fairly relaxed as long as you are not an idiot. It is pretty much assumed that people will drink regardless of age, and the campus just really tries to make sure everyone is safe about it through Public Safety and the Resident Assistants.

I think the system at Bucknell is fair. Most people are intelligent here and are mostly accountable for their decisions. I've dealt with the dean, public safety, and the point system before -- it's really generous. Some more spoiled students might get a bit self-righteous, though, and give the administration lip.
