Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Because Bucknell is located in a somewhat isolated area, there is hardly anything to worry about when it comes to safety and security. The campus is laid out in a manner that further isolates it, as the southern end of campus is lined with acres of cornfields, and the northern and eastern ends are surrounded by neighborhoods. Furthermore, most of the neighborhoods around campus consist of upperclass students. Because the town is small, there isn’t much crime, although Bucknellians do joke about the fact that the school is in close proximity to Lewisburg Penitentiary, a federal penitentiary!

Every week in the "Bucknellian," the student newspaper, there is a published Public Safety log of all the previous week’s offenses. The majority of these deal with underage drinking and public drunkenness. Occasionally, students will hear reports of an unwanted sexual encounter, but these are seemingly due to a miscommunication between the people involved and the fact that, most likely, they were under the influence of alcohol. As a general rule, there is not a problem with theft on campus, but every now and then when students leave their belongings out in the open, items such as books or laptops are taken. However, students usually seem to have more complaints about the consistent presence of Public Safety officers everywhere than they do about safety and security. Public Safety recently became armed, but students have not noticed the difference. Overall, the campus is extremely safe, and the Bucknell community is tight-knit.

Safe :)

Bucknell is a completely safe college campus. There is hardly much crime, and security is friendly and always there for you. I feel completely fine walking around alone, during the day or at night.

Safety

I feel very safe on campus. I'm not even worried about leaving my stuff around campus...unless it's a Northface.

No Need to Worry

The safety at Bucknell is amazing. I feel safe walking home at any hour and can contact Public Safety in regards to any problem that may happen. The university is very proactive about keeping the environment as safe as possible. Residential buildings require student IDs for entrance, with specific hours where only residents of specific buildings are allowed admittance. There are also emergency phones located around campus; however, I have never heard of a student needing to use them. There is a very low crime rate. Public Safety Officers patrol the area in cars and are armed. They are always on call and assist with security at large functions.
