Tips to Succeed

  • Balance your academics and social life.
  • Buy books online or from someone selling them on campus because the bookstore is extremely overpriced.
  • Don’t make reading optional.
  • Don’t spend too much time on Facebook
  • Don’t take 8 a.m. classes, especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays, because you won’t want to get up after going out on Monday and Wednesday nights.
  • Get involved on campus
  • Get to know your professors.
  • Get your GEs out of the way early on.
  • Go to class—classes are small, so the professors know if you don’t show up.
  • If you want to be part of the Greek system, work on your networking!
  • Take advantage of the career fairs on and off campus.
  • Visit the CDC (Career Development Center) early on.

Urban Legends

  • All freshmen cross through the Big University gates after Matriculation and they go back through the gates after graduation. Legend has it that if a student goes back through the gates before graduation then they are doomed to fail out of Bucknell.
  • In the quad area above Freas Hall, there are some benches that look out towards the mountains. Legend has it that if you kiss someone while the sun is setting up here, then you will marry him or her someday.
  • Legend has it that Hunt Hall (the sorority dorm) is haunted by a female ghost dressed in a red or green raincoat.

Traditions

  • 100 Nights - This event brings back a tradition from the 1970s and 1980s of counting down the days until graduation. The senior class gathers in Davis Gym to celebrate their years at Bucknell, reminisce about the experiences, and generate excitement about staying involved with Bucknell after graduation.
  • Bid Day - The day that all students involved in the rush process gets their bids from a Greek organization. Many girls can be seen running back to their dorm rooms from the LC.
  • BU After Dark - This takes place once every semester in the Fieldhouse and is basically an indoor carnival. Carnival food such as cotton candy is provided, and the activities include sumo wrestling and obstacle courses.
  • Christy’s - Christy’s is the huge a cappella concert held annually in the Rooke Chapel where all four groups (the Bison Chips, Two Past Midnight, Beyond Unison and the Silhouettes) perform.
  • Chrysalis - Chrysalis is the spring formal dance with a different famous performer each year.
  • First Night - At the First Night ceremony for freshmen, the entire class gets together at the beginning of their second semester to meet their student governing body, get the class flag, crest, and colors. Then, they go sing the alma mater on the president’s lawn. It declares them officially as alumni.
  • Greek Welcome Day/Night - This occurs the day after Bid Day. In the afternoon, all of the female pledges stand on top of Freas Hall screaming their sorority’s songs. The new fraternity brothers come watch with their fraternity’s banner in tow. That night, there is a big party, and all of the fraternities are open to new and old Greek members.
  • Houseparty Weekend - Houseparty Weekend occurs in the springtime at the end of March. It is basically an entire weekend of partying. The fraternities remain open to every student with a wristband.
  • Welcome Back Fesitval - At the Welcome Back Festival each fall, there is a carnival set up on the lawn outside of the LC. There’s food, games, bucking broncos, and an air-filled trampoline. Everyone mingles and is welcomed back to the University for another academic year.
