Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s obvious that off-campus housing is not too prevalent at Bucknell. Freshmen, in fact, don’t have a choice and must live on campus. However, after freshman year, students may move off campus. Housing is guaranteed all four years at Bucknell, so not many students chose to live off campus, and the ones who do are almost all seniors. The students must get approval from the University to live off campus. They have to go through an application process and a variety of factors can prevent them from being approved. For example, if their fraternity house or sorority suite (there are no sorority houses at Bucknell; it’s rumored that this is due to an old Pennsylvania law that says more then four women under the same roof is considered a brothel) is not filled, they won’t receive approval. Also, students who have accrued a certain number of “points” because of their behavior may be denied the privilege to live off campus.

There is not a significant amount of houses available for rent in the downtown area, and even less are available that are well-kept. However, because there is not a significant demand to live downtown, the lack of houses is not too big of an issue. There are stories circulating of bad landlords and houses that are quite rickety, so it’s really important to ask other students what landlords they have used. The majority of students live along and off of 7th Street and 6th Street. This area is always hopping at night with parties, some open to the entire campus, others more exclusive to just a Greek organization or a circle of friends. There is on-campus apartment-style housing available for those who do not want to live off campus, but these apartments are hard to get unless you have an extremely high lottery pick.

Good Selection

The cost is fairly cheap and since it's Lewisburg it is very safe for the most part. I hear the landlords aren't bad at all and there is usually a good amount of avaliable housing.

Off-Campus Is for Seniors

Off-campus housing is a bit of a challenge at Bucknell. Because Lewisburg is so small, the housing options are mostly limited to single-family homes a short walk from campus. Luckily, most of these homes are rented to students, however the lease must be signed over a year in advance, ie if you wanted to live in a house senior year, you had better reserve one during your sophomore year. The price of off-campus and on-campus housing is comparable, but the right to live in a house is mostly reserved for seniors. Underclassmen can enjoy the wonderful on-campus housing options such as the Mods and the Gateways.

Cheap for a Reason!

Rent is pretty low compared to more developed regions. But, due to the fact that the land the houses are built on is not safe to build more houses, the landlords don't put any money into the apartments. They simply repair them, but never make them better than they need to be. Due to this, the houses are falling apart. Cheap, and you get what you pay for.

Also, there are a variety of renters in the downtown Lewisburg area. Oftentimes, they post signs on Bucknell bulletin boards. The best way to find a landlord, though, is to ask other students whom they have used and if they were satisfied.
