Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
If the statistics don’t say it clearly enough, CPP represents just about every culture you could possibly think of, and then some. In addition to this, there are many diversity-supporting clubs on campus that represent various ethnicities. Some of the larger ethnic clubs on campus are Barcada (Filipino-American Student Association) and the Latino Business Students Association. And if you like all types of food, these multicultural clubs tend to do a lot of food-driven fundraisers. Sometimes you can smell carne asada being grilled in front of the Cultural Center or Korean BBQ being cooked out in the University Park. Not only do you get a tasty lunch, but it’s cheap, the money is going toward a good cause, the lines are short, and it’s a welcome change to the same old food you eat every day on campus.
There is nowhere on campus you can go to escape the diversity—it’s pretty much everywhere, and it’s great. You get different perspectives from each culture in classroom conversations, and it’s a good experience in general. If you plan on staying in Southern California you will be forced to deal with the multicultural atmosphere, and CPP is a great place to start learning about other cultures. However, not many come to CPP from out of state, and in fact, a lot of people don’t even look into CPP from out of state unless they are looking into the hospitality school, the engineering department, or the architecture program. On the other hand, there are a lot of international students—mostly from Asia, but there are also a few students from countries like Germany, Morocco, and Mexico.

This campus is very diverse. It was almost a culture shock for me to see so many different backgrounds in my classes. But I think that gives CPP a better dynamic. Everyone is a lot more open-minded, and there are always diversity programs happening. |

The campus is very diverse—one of the most diverse in the CSU system. The best part is that there are no racial lines drawn. Everyone is here for the same reason, and we all work together to achieve our goals in education. |

The campus, I think, is pretty diverse. Since I work on campus in the student center, I actually do get to see a lot of diversity around here. It’s a very good thing. I have learned a lot about people and their cultures, and I am very grateful for it. |

FactsEconomic Status
Most students come from middle-class families. There is also a good chunk of students who come from low-income families that are attending school on scholarships.
Gay Pride
CPP is noted in the top 100 LGBT campuses in the Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students, a major campus guide to highlight the 100 most LGBT-friendly campuses in the United States. Since Cal Poly is such a diverse campus, it's not surprising that the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender members of the campus community are supported by organizations on campus such as the Pride Center, Queer Students and Allies for Equality (QSAFE), and La Familia de Cal Poly.
Minority Clubs
Because there are so many cultural clubs, the Multicultural Council (MCC) has been established to look over the 30 cultural clubs on campus. In addition, the Cultural Centers are a part of the Office of Student Life which house several student centers that represent minorities.
Most Common Religions
Many organizations on campus represent the Christian religion, though other religions, including Buddhism, Judaism, and Islam are represented as well.
Political Activity
There is not much political activity on campus. You may occasionally run into demonstrators protesting, but nothing major.
