College Prowler Take

Cal Poly is mostly outdoors, and it can be a pain walking across campus to your classes from building to building or to and from the parking lot in the blazing heat or in the pouring rain. The best advice is to park near a shuttle stop in the parking lots so you have the shuttles in plain sight, and you can hop out of your car and onto the shuttle as soon as it comes around. And don’t forget an umbrella or a hooded sweatshirt, just in case. The summers are pretty warm, with July and August being the warmest months. Temperatures in the summer range from the 70s and 80s to the low 100s. A lot of people head down to the beach to get away from the heat because it can just get to be too much. Plus, it’s a good excuse to go check out the “scenery” in Huntington or Newport Beach! Definitely have shorts and tanks on hand. Flip-flops are a huge deal out here. In fact, it’s considered better to wear a pair of Rainbows with pants than it is to wear shorts and a pair of Chucks. During the winter, it gets cold for local Southern Californians, but it’s nothing compared to those sub-zero, snowy winters back in New York. Temperatures range from the high 40s to the high 50s in the winter. Sweatshirts and jackets are good to have, but you don’t need a full-blown parka or snow pants; Pomona never gets snow. There is occasionally some hail in the winter, but you don’t have to worry about getting snowed in.

Weather is unpredictable everywhere, and Cal Poly certainly is no exception. I’ve found myself going into class in perfect weather and coming out while the rain is pouring outside and realizing that I have no umbrella and I have to walk to my car, which is on the opposite side of campus.

It can get pretty hot at times. I think it’s because we are sort of in a valley. So the beginning of fall and the end of spring are pretty hot, which is perfect for moving in and out of the dorms or suites. The winter can get pretty wet. I would buy some rain boots. They have some really cute ones now.

The weather varies here. Sometimes hot, sometimes cold. Sometimes it’s cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon. But, there is a lot of walking, so if you sweat easily, wear something that breathes!

In the summer it is hot. I would wear shorts and a tank top. In the winter it gets colder. A sweater and jeans would suffice well for this type of weather. However, with the weather being so weird lately, I would keep an umbrella and a sweater in your car just in case the weather suddenly changes, even if it is clear and sunny out.

Bring clothes for hot weather, cold weather, and rain! A little of everything. But comfortable shoes are a must! It’s a big campus, and there are a lot of hills!
