Parking Permits
Student resident permits are available only to graduate or undergraduate students who have current residency in Marks House, Braun House, Fleming House, Ricketts House, Dabney House, Blacker House, Page House, Lloyd House, Ruddock House, Avery House, the Catalina housing complex, or the Holliston modular housing. Getting a parking permit is simple. All a student has to do is register his or her car at the parking office on Wilson Street. Registration is by month, so you are not obligated to keep your permit for the whole year or semester if you don't need to.
College Prowler Take
Caltech is a small school, but oddly enough, the students sport quite a few cars. Part of the reason there are so many cars is that it is difficult to maneuver in Southern California without a car; people here aren’t too big on public transportation. The professors, administrators, staff, graduate students, and undergrads all share the same parking structures. There are three large parking structures (one more in progress) and smaller lots all over campus. Parking on the street is allowed during the day, but Pasadena has strict laws about parking at night. Parking maybe short at times, but that’s why they are putting up a new structure. It is pretty easy for students to find parking. Students have small lots associated with each of the houses, which they can park in, as well as the large parking structures. Parking is often coordinated between partners who have keys to each others cars, because some of the lots require blocking people in. There are very few assigned spots; most students just scavenge for parking when they return from their errands and park wherever there is an empty space. There are special slots for some professors and administrators, though. Students don’t really need a car to get around campus or most of the necessary places, but a car can be a nice thing to have for weekend getaways to the beach or to LA. The biggest complaint that students have for parking is that it’s a half a block from most housing, and sometimes they have to use stairs because they have to park above ground level. Oh, cry me a river!

If you have to go somewhere in the middle of the weekday, somebody coming to work might take your spot, but you can usually find another one somewhere else (maybe slightly farther away, but ‘far’ in Caltech terms is under a 10-minute walk). Speaking of which, the campus is pretty small; end to end, it’ll take you 10–15 minutes to walk at a leisurely pace. |

As for parking during certain times during the week, it is difficult to get a space. That is usually during business hours when Caltech staff need to park. That’s not much of a problem, because Techers usually do not leave campus during the week anyway, except for late at night to grab a midnight snack. |

Before, the parking situation was free, and everyone who wanted one could get a parking permit. But I think there was a crunch one year, and so the administration set a limit of 25 frosh parking permits. Of course, everyone else could still park. The parking permit quota wasn’t much of a problem because, as it turned out, only 20 frosh actually wanted permits. |

There was some talk this year about limiting or forbidding freshman parking, but I don’t know what came of that. It was unpopular among the students. |

We have a parking structure about a block from the houses where most people park. I don’t know of anyone who’s ever not been able to find a spot there. Each house has its own special parking spaces that it uses, though I’m not sure any of them are official spots for them or if they’re just traditionally the houses’. |
Did You Know?Good Luck Getting a Parking Spot Here! In the lots next to buildings during the day since professors, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars park there. Also, Holliston lots are full during the day, but at night, it’s very easy to find a spot. Parking on the street is feasible during the day, but prohibited by the city at night.
