Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Poly is not exactly known for its athletics. Basketball and baseball air on local stations, but to be honest, few students actually attend games. The back page of the daily student paper is devoted to sports, but half of the time, the articles mourn Poly’s loss to yet another team from a bigger school. Heck, any school that actually needs a club whose purpose is to promote school enthusiasm—Poly has Mustang Maniacs—probably isn’t doing well in the sports department. Nonetheless, there are exceptions. Our field hockey and women’s basketball teams tend to do quite well and have steady followings.

It’s not that Poly students don’t care for athletics. In fact, they care most about playing them, rather than watching from the stands. Intramural sports are becoming increasingly popular, and the recreation center offers a wide variety of mini-tournaments to participate in. Another reason for lagging sports enthusiasm may be the demographics of the school itself. Let’s face it, there are a lot of computer nerds here, and computer nerds as a group are generally not too excited about sports. Also, students tend to be very concerned about academics, leaving little time for extra-curricular activities.

Decent Sports Program

All of our sports, except for football are NCAA Division I sports so we are pretty competitive. The most popular sport would probably be the Mens Soccer team because our rivalry with UCSB every year always draws a sellout stadium that breaks NCAA records for most attendance to a college soccer game. But our school hardly gets televised or even highlighted on ESPN so overall we have a decent sports program.

As far as our IM Sports, we have great facilities for almost every sport. Every quarter students, along with their teams are placed on the wait list in several sports since the leagues fill up quickly.

Might as Well

Besides homework and outdoor activities, Sports are the way to go. It is a pleasant experience showing school spirit and be wild with other students.

MANGLERS

The Mangers are the unofficial fan club of Cal Poly's men's soccer team. This crew is full of an obscene amount of dedication and spirit, and absolutely love the game of soccer. Soccer is one of the school's biggest sports. The football team is decent, but doesn't draw as many fans as soccer does. People can play for the school team, club team or intramurals.

School Spirit

Cal Poly has a healthy sense of school spirit. We have no intense rivalries to match the likes of Stanford and Berkeley, but students (especially those in technical majors) are proud of the Cal Poly name. Most have some sort of CP paraphernalia, whether it is a bumper sticker, a T-shirt, or the increasingly popular gym shorts with “CPSU” written conspicuously across the back.

However, students aren’t afraid to complain, either. If something is wrong, you can bet complaints will be heard until something is done about it. More pride is generally attached to certain majors than colleges. For example, the IT students obviously identify more with their major than the College of Business, which they come under.

In all, Cal Poly students feel secure in the school’s identity. Secure enough that they don’t need to make a show of “school spirit” by putting down other universities, and secure enough that they don’t feel like traitors if they make a complaint now and then. Cal Poly has enough of a reputation that going here is justification enough.
