College Prowler Take

Poly is not exactly known for its athletics. Basketball and baseball air on local stations, but to be honest, few students actually attend games. The back page of the daily student paper is devoted to sports, but half of the time, the articles mourn Poly’s loss to yet another team from a bigger school. Heck, any school that actually needs a club whose purpose is to promote school enthusiasm—Poly has Mustang Maniacs—probably isn’t doing well in the sports department. Nonetheless, there are exceptions. Our field hockey and women’s basketball teams tend to do quite well and have steady followings.

It’s not that Poly students don’t care for athletics. In fact, they care most about playing them, rather than watching from the stands. Intramural sports are becoming increasingly popular, and the recreation center offers a wide variety of mini-tournaments to participate in. Another reason for lagging sports enthusiasm may be the demographics of the school itself. Let’s face it, there are a lot of computer nerds here, and computer nerds as a group are generally not too excited about sports. Also, students tend to be very concerned about academics, leaving little time for extra-curricular activities.

The varsity and intramural sport...

The varsity and intramural sport teams are both really great. The games aren’t as big of a deal like some other schools, but the teams are still good. There are various levels for intramurals, which lets those who are super serious but not ready for the varsity commitment play, and then there's also a level for those just looking to have fun.

Football is popular during the season. Soccer gets pretty popular, too. My friend played on an intramural softball team. Apparently, there are a lot of teams, and it's really easy to get on one no matter what you want to play.

It seems like a couple sports are always big and have a large following rather than the ones that are doing well. Intramural sports are really relaxed and a lot of people do them. We have the typical basketball, volleyball, and soccer.

Varsity sports are small for everybody except the band. Intramurals are huge.
