College Prowler Take

The main complaint about campus police tends to be that they are strict in all the wrong areas. Rather than pursuing thefts, prowlers, or students with alcohol on campus, they ticket you for riding your bike into a walk-only zone, or for riding your skateboard at all. A “California stop” can get you pulled over if the police have nothing better to do, and usually they don’t. The fact is that crime on campus is so low that police are looking for an excuse to hang around.

As far as parking tickets are concerned, beware. Any violation will probably get you cited. That means parking on the end of a full row, loitering in a fire truck zone while waiting for an open spot, parking in staff areas, or anything else you can think of. Nevertheless, this is not an excuse to be hard on campus cops. They’re friendly and helpful. If you ever really need them, they will be there. Most students would rather have police who are a little too strict than no police at all. They keep the peace around the campus, and for those the police bother, it really is just a little inconvenience.

Campus police can be pretty strict...

Campus police can be pretty strict about things. For drinking in the dorms: The first offense is a written warning, and you have to write an essay about why underage drinking is bad. The second time, you will lose your housing and also lose a lot of money in the process. When it comes to drugs, there is a more strict policy. If you are caught with weed or anything else, you automatically lose your housing and could possibly be kicked out of the school. That doesn't mean that people don't do these things. Students are going to drink no matter what, and they are going to get high if they want to. It's all a matter of keeping it low-key.

Campus police is pretty laid back...

Campus police is pretty laid back about drugs and drinking as far as I can tell, just as long as you keep the noise down and aren't a disturbance. They do have regulations—if you break them, you will get caught.

I think that they can be pretty strict, but they do have our safety in mind and stress being safe if we do party. I think they are willing to turn a blind eye to a certain point. They do have a line that if you cross it, you are in trouble.

My roommate got a ticket for jaywalking near our dorm. Skateboarders are also easy tickets, although I still see a good deal of that going on. As far as drinking goes, it's hit-or-miss whether the cop will ignore you or write you up when walking back onto campus.
