Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
Although many students feel that diversity is lacking on campus, it is an issue that the administration is very conscious of and striving to improve. This campus is lacking in African American students, but there is a very strong presence of Asian students, especially in technical and computing majors. Even if student representatives of different ethnicities are lacking, the structure to accommodate them is ready and waiting. There is an array of multi-cultural clubs and organizations, whether culture-specific or simply supporting diversity of students in general. Conflicts regarding diversity usually surround issues of sexuality rather than race or gender. There are large groups of both liberal and conservative students, who often disagree about whether sexuality should be lumped in with ethnicity. Forums are organized for debates about these issues and student opinions, on both sides, are heard.

Most of the people are white, but there are some minorities. We have a multicultural center along with various fraternities and sororities for minorities. As for sexuality, there is a pride center, but the campus has a very small percentage of LGBT community.

It is not very diverse racially or...
It is not very diverse racially or ethnically, but the people have a wide range of ideologies about life, religion, or politics. It makes for some absolutely awesome discussions. Sexually, it's mostly straight, but we have a growing and strong LGBT population that is well supported by the rest of the community. Economically, there are people from all backgrounds. We're all following our dreams and don't let anything stand in our way.

FactsEconomic Status
Economically, Cal Poly is quite diverse. Many students work their way through college, taking out enormous loans, while others seem to have an inexhaustible supply of parental finances.
Gay Pride
Cal Poly leaves a little to be desired in this area. There is an active group on campus, the GLBU (Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals United), but there have been incidents where they have been harassed. However, it seems to be getting better. Groups like these definitely have the protection and support of the administration.
Minority Clubs
There are 26 clubs on campus that have a racial and cultural connection, including four Greek societies.
Most Common Religions
Christianity is the major religious force in the community. There are three or four on-campus ministries and plenty of churches to choose from. However, not all Cal Poly Christians think alike.
Political Activity
Cal Poly is active on both ends of the political spectrum. At one point, we had peace protests and pro-war rallies supporting the troops in Iraq. The school newspaper, Mustang Daily, has reported that student voting numbers in on-campus elections (for student body president) have continued to go down in recent years. But, if you’re looking for heated debates, they're not hard to be found. On the other hand, nobody bugs you if you just don’t care.
