College Prowler Take
Greek life is at Cal Poly if you want it, and it’s not if you don’t. Greek organizations are lauded for their abilities to network and support people in the same interest group or ethnicity, but it’s not the only place you can find like-minded people. The primary function of Greek organizations tends to be a social network of “guaranteed” friends. If you manage to rush a society, you are secure in the knowledge that you’ll always have someone to hang out with at a party. You might also get an opportunity to live in a frat or sorority house, which serves for convenient off-campus housing. Most frats and sororities are like to party, so if you don’t drink, it’s probably not the place for you. There is no reason to feel pressured into Greek life. In fact, those who are not involved in Greek organizations often seem very critical of the system. If you like parties, there are plenty going on outside of the Greek system. If you like networking, join a career-oriented group. If you want friends, join an interest club or simply introduce yourself to the person sitting next to you in class. It’s not that hard. If you decide to rush a Greek society, do your research. Make sure it’s not discredited for unsafe practices or giving alcohol to minors.

Greek life is the party scene a lot of the time due to the proximity of the frats to campus. They don't dominate the campus, but they provide a lot of parties. In general, they all seem pretty nice.

I'm not into Greek life. I know a lot of friends who are in a sorority, and they like being in groups. Greek life seems too controlling for me.

While we have the occasional stereotypical frat/sorority member, on the whole, most of the people I meet who are in Greek organizations are average people. They do it for the social aspects, the fun events, and not for the often-believed sense of elitism. |
