College Prowler Take
Security on campus is sufficient, but not exemplary. A lot of students feel that safety is not an issue. Most of the favorable comments about safety came from males, while females are somewhat more concerned about their personal security. Precautions are taken so that the male and female population feels safe and secure. Marked vans are available after dark for rides home around the area, but they only pick students up at a few designated places. There are also blue lights around campus, stations where the push of a button will bring a police officer within minutes. However, only main thoroughfares are lighted at night, and dimly at that. Better lighting may relieve the uneasiness on campus. Both the campus and the community seem to have difficulty admitting that there is a problem. But, the red handprints formerly stenciled on the ground to mark a sexual assault have undergone criticism from the administration. Sexual assaults and rapes which occur off campus go largely unreported by local news agencies. San Luis Obispo is certainly much safer than any large city, but be sure to use good judgment.

Security and safety is pretty good. The University Police officers are very friendly and understanding. They help you out even if it's something minor.

It's really a safe campus. The biggest theft is of bikes. My suggestion would be to get a decent bike lock to solve that and a computer lock to protect your laptop. Other than that, you should be covered. University Police has blue lights set up all over campus that you can push if you're in trouble and a cop will be there in two minutes to help you out.

Campus Is Safe--Just Be Aware of Your Surroundings
B+
Overall the campus is pretty safe. But of course the campus isn't free of crime. The most common crimes you'll hear about on campus are bike theft and laptop theft. You'll sometimes hear about a student getting assaulted on campus (at spots where the red hands are). A couple months ago a prisoner escaped...from the nearby Men's Colony! Now who would put a prison near a university?
Crimes like what I mentioned above don't occur often. Even so, University Police makes quite a lot of effort to protect the students. These include the emergency notification system, "blue light phones", and escort van service. Most of the time the police has to deal with students returning drunk from off-campus parties.
I feel comfortable walking alone during the day, as long as there are other students walking around. I try to avoid going out late at night unless I'm with a group. Advice to female students: take a self-defense class if you can. The rec center offers karate lessons and University Police hosts self-defense workshops once in a while.
Just use common sense and you'll be fine. Don't open your door or window to strangers, don't go walking around alone at 2 in the morning, don't drive right after binge drinking at a party. And watch your laptop!
