Cheapest Place to Get a Drink
At home—the majority of Poly students prefer to buy their own alcohol and drink before or after going somewhere. House parties are bigger than bar hopping.
College Prowler Take
Nightlife is fairly active in San Luis. There are plenty of opportunities to dance, drink, or party. Students enjoy going to Tortilla Flats or the Graduate for food, drink, and dancing. Regardless of whether or not you’re a country music fan, students like to dress up in their wildest country duds and kick up some dust with friends on country line dancing nights. If this isn’t your scene, then the Madonna Inn hosts somewhat classier nights with ballroom dancing. One great element of nightlife in San Luis is that there are activities available for all interests. You don’t have to just drink, other activities are available to enjoy yourself. Many places stay open late (especially on Thursday market nights) to accommodate students. Outdoor activities are popular, so you can go rock climbing, play miniature golf, or go to the drive-in. Students also enjoy late-night gatherings at Denny’s or Cold Stone Creamery when they just want to sit around and chat. Linnea’s, the local coffeehouse, usually hosts local or traveling singers and songwriters on the weekends. House parties are also in abundance, generally on the weekends and always after finals are over. You don’t have to look far for a party if you know someone who knows someone. That’s probably enough to get you through the door.

There's plenty of nightlife for all ages. From what I hear, the bars are pretty cool—Mother's, Downtown Brew, Frog & Peach to name a few. For all under 21, everything is there if you're looking for it. There's plenty of non-alcoholic activities, too. The dorms do a lot of weekend activities, and The Graduate downtown has dances. Line dancing on Thursday nights is extremely popular, for example.

Organization Parties
Most clubs or campus groups use campus facilities to throw parties or book a room at a local restaurant. Partying at Poly is more of a spur-of-the-moment affair that entails a group of friends getting together to go out.
Club Listings
Another popular nightclub with dancing every night of the week. Sit out in the huge patio and visit the four-corner bar on the inside.
This is both a restaurant and the central coast’s largest nightclub, with dancing Tuesday through Saturday. It is probably the most popular place to go, especially Thursdays, which is country music night. Eight bucks gets you through the door.
Bar Listings
Both a restaurant and bar, Mother’s has live DJ after 9 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday, plus karaoke after 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Won SLO Times “Best Bar” award tons of times.
Dacing and drinking, the Library has it all. It is usually packed with Cal Poly students because it’s cheap and close to campus. Go early, eat, and listen to the live bands play. The Library Lounge 723 Higuera St. (805) 542-0199
It is a neat pub with a huge backyard and pretty good rock, punk, and metal bands. Frog & Peach Pub 728 Higuera St. (805) 595-3764
The brewmaster has never proved wrong here. You can get your drinks in pints, pitchers, four-beer samplers, or six-beer samplers. Watch for daily specials incluing kegs and eggs on Sunday mornings and free tacos on Fridays.
This bar is kind of a dive, but cheap drinks and plenty of Cal Poly students makes this a happening place. Bull’s Tavern 1032 Chorro St. (805) 541-2217
With happy hour every day from 4 p.m.–7 p.m., the Shack is the place to go. Watch any game on TV and drink a good draft beer, including Pozo Pale Ale, Sam Adams Boston Lager, and Natty Lite.
What to Do if You're Not 21
Anyone over 18 can get into the Grad, and anyone at all can go to a house party. You won’t miss out on the social scene at all if you aren’t old enough to drink.
