Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Cal Poly is not known for its school spirit. In the past, if you went to a sporting event, the cheering section would hardly be very impressive. Students say this is because CPP is missing a very important sport: football.

Despite the lack of a football team, Cal Poly’s school spirit has been steadily rising. Billy Bronco, the mascot, has been making more and more campus appearances. He currently has 3,728 friends on Facebook, which just goes to show the rising popularity of athletics. The Bronco cheerleaders have also stepped it up and are actually starting to compete outside of CPP.

Cal Poly Pomona is best known for its basketball teams. The men’s team has made it to the NCAA playoffs countless times and is near the top of the Division II teams. In fact, Cal Poly Pomona boasts more national titles than any other Division II school in the state of California!

Intramural sports have recently seen a rise in student participation. The current favorite is Ultimate Frisbee, whose team just returned from a competition in Las Vegas. CPP encourages students to head to any game and cheer on their team. After all, it’s free as long as you have your Bronco ID card, and the cheerleaders often throw free Cal Poly merchandise into the stands during half-time.

Sports

Our school always interacts with the sports teams on our campus. There is never a game that is boring. There will be posters all over the school for free games and free food at the sporting events that help the student body get more involved.

Sports on Campus Is Great, but Only Thing Missing Is Football

Basketball is huge on campus because Cal Poly Pomona won the men's 2010 national title and women's 2011 title. Cal Poly Pomona loves to gloat that they have won 14 national titles, more than any division II University in California.

Most Popular Sports

The basketball teams regularly bring in the largest crowds.

Most Overlooked Teams

Our teams in volleyball, tennis, and soccer are good, but they often don’t get the recognition they deserve.

School Spirit

School spirit is the biggest thing that Cal Poly lacks. The University and ASI try their best to promote school spirit by hosting events and handing out things like Bronco spirit bands. One of the main reasons why there isn’t much spirit probably has to do with the fact that CPP is a commuter school—not enough people are on campus long enough to be proud of it! However, in the last year or so, school spirit seems to be on its way up!

Getting Tickets

Tickets are free for students at a majority of the sporting events, as long as you present your Bronco ID. For those that are not students, tickets are no more than $5 with the exception of some cross-country events that are held at state parks.

Best Place to Take a Walk

With the walking you will be doing to your classes, you probably don’t need anything else! There is a short, uphill walk to the Collin's School off Camphor Lane behind Panda Express. A lot of people like to jog around the citrus trees along East Campus Drive and down South Campus Drive along the outskirts of the school. But it’s not a good idea to do this at night; it’s not lit at all after dark. A nice calming walk would be down University Drive, by the duck pond and all the dorms. There is a legitimate path, so you won't be in the way of any cars. Talk to the Student Health Center and the Bronco Fitness Center for more ideas.
