Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Long Beach State is a very prestigious and well-known university, with alumni ranging from Steven Spielberg to Steve Martin. Having popular names attached to CSULB always helps draw in students because they realize that the University breeds leaders. CSULB is also known for being a large commuter campus. But around campus, there is a consensus that the more you are involved, the more likely you are going to enjoy yourself. Having great professors with adaptable teaching styles helps add to the experience. Academic programs and learning communities are noted as being extremely helpful towards student networking and connections with faculty as well as other students. For students who love to party, they also find a connection with friends on campus and in surrounding areas. However, CSULB is not the university for everyone.

For students who live in the surrounding area, the University is the number-one choice. However, there is a large amount of students that may live farther away and still know CSULB is a great institution at an affordable price and make the decision to attend (even knowing it's a commuter campus). Long Beach State has respect among other Cal States and UCs, and for this reason, many high-caliber, "achiever" students choose the University over others. The fact that most CSULB students graduate with little or no debt is also a perk that helps students decide to attend. CSULB may not have the most active student body, but the majority of the school is very proud of the University and is almost always sporting Beach gear. Not being in a club or organization can be very detrimental to a student's progress, though; a sense of belonging can improve students' grades and social life, especially at CSULB, where students can easily get lost in the shuffle of attending a university with a population of 30,000 people.

Challenging, but I Don't Regret Any of It

As most probably know, being a math or science major is one of the most difficult majors you can take on. I am currently a biology major with an option in cell and molecular biology. Although it is extremely challenging and difficult, the professors are very helpful and want you to do your best. My career goals are to become a medical lab technician and further studies later on in the future to become a oncology surgeon at a medical school. I am currently not concerned finding a job as a medical technician because I know that it is a specific area that I am going into. At CSULB, they offer a biotechnology certification in which you will be participating in internships and various research projects to get you started even before you graduate from college.

Parties Galore

Get yourself well acquainted with someone who is in a fraternity. Most of them usually throw parties and events almost every week. And for those not interested in college parties, there's also Sevilla's nightclub just downtown about 10-15 minutes away and usually have 18+ events on thursdays. If not, Los Angeles is not that far away and has many clubs for 18+ on thursdays, fridays, and saturdays.
