On the whole, students most satisfied with their experience are very involved in the heart of the school. Many students choose to become RAs or ambassadors, work in the Matador Involvement Center or the Design Factory, join a sorority/fraternity, or get involved in intramurals or club sports. CSUN is a commuter school, meaning that most students live at home and commute to school. Because so many students are native to the area, they are not compelled to meet new people and participate in school activities. Years later, many of these commuter students say that the school lacks a social scene and they wish they had moved away from home to go to college. On the other hand, other CSUN students move from small, rural towns to go to a college in the city, and they absolutely love the campus. However, students are correct when saying that Northridge isn't a typical college town. Most of the partying takes place in Los Angeles. Many students also acknowledge that the school has a laid-back atmosphere about academics, which allows students to work and live a life beyond their computer screen. Students cite the school's ubiquitous diversity as a pinnacle example of how students can learn from their environment by hearing the voice and seeing the values of different cultures.
