Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
On an any given day at CSUN, you might see an Asian American club fair, a Capoeira demonstration, a political group handing out flyers, a MEChA or CAUSA protest, a same-sex marriage on the lawn, a memorial of the Armenian genocide, or a number of other activities that indicate the high level of diversity at CSUN. Although Caucasian people make up the largest percentage at the school, that number has been growing smaller each year. The diversity at CSUN reflects the diversity of the valley and Los Angeles, and the greater part of the student body are clear that they enjoy learning and spending time in such a dynamic, ever-changing place. Professors also impart this attitude by openly embracing issues of diversity in their curriculum. Tolerance is so high at CSUN that hate crimes and intolerant graffiti are unheard of. In fact, Los Angeles is home to the Museum of Tolerance and the Skirball Cultural Center, two foundations dedicated to the preservation of openness and diversity. Many students are changed by their experiences at CSUN because they are able to befriend people or join groups that help them affirm their own cultural identity and celebrate the differences between all types of people. The cultural clubs are very active and make themselves known through fundraisers, demonstrations, rallies, memorials, or pamphlets. Although some ethnic groups tend to segregate themselves, you will find that most everyone will open up.

The campus is very diverse. CSUN...
The campus is very diverse. CSUN has a number of programs to ensure that all ethnic groups have an opportunity to attend college. Before the late ‘60s CSUN was an all-white campus. You could probably count the number of black and Latino students on your fingers. CSUN was one of the first Universities to offer an ROP program to help low-income inner-city kids get a college education. CSUN was also one of the first universities to offer a Pan-African studies degree. CSUN actually had an incident where a group of black students took the president of the University and the staff ‘hostage’ in order to ensure black students got an equal chance at education and fair treatment. This helped the University develop its current outlook of equal opportunity. |
