Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Despite the fact that only seven percent of CSUN students are involved in a sorority/fraternity, the Greeks have a strong presence on campus, especially during Rush. Sororities and fraternities usually do awesome charity events. For example, the ZBT house actually did a strip show one year, and the AOP house holds an annual talent show, which is hilarious. The Greeks also throw good parties, but usually the frat houses are known for better parties than the sororities. The best parties are at the beginning or end of the semester. Anyone is allowed into these parities even if you’re not Greek. You can find out about these parties through word of mouth, a flyer that is being passed around campus, or the MySpace account. The Greeks also throw weekend trips to Mexico or Tahoe, which can be a blast if you want to party for three days straight. You don’t even have to be in a fraternity or sorority to go, as long as you know someone who can vouch for you. Greeks also have a pretty fun intramural system going on, so you don’t have to be a partier to participate in all the functions.

If you plan on joining a fraternity or sorority, then take your time in deciding—don’t make a commitment too soon. Often, the Greek system turns out to be different than most people expect, and leaving the system is more complicated than it seems. If you don’t want to join the Greek system, a good way to keep up with the party system is to befriend or room with someone in a sorority or fraternity. Many people think Greeks pay for friends, but you can decide when you experience it first-hand.

I am not in a sorority but I'd love to join! All the greek girls seem to be extremely social and interactive.

The Modern Greek

In any group of people, there is a fluctuation of personalities and interest. There are Greeks that associate based on majors, social issues, traditions, and culture. They participate in community-based projects, and put on events, some of which includes parties. Greek life in some cases has elevated the social atmosphere and in other cases degraded it. For instance, in the case where a Sorority put on a series of events for students, it was a benefit; countering that was the instance where one fraternity trashed an area as part of a prank. Greek life certainly has its pros- and cons; while maintaining its some- what typical reputation for being the socially elite. In a university there is no higher archy , only within colleges are there renown, popular persons. Being a Greek is an identifying mark, that says you are apart of something besides yourself. The living accommodations for Greeks include houses, and separates living courters.

Greeks Life

I have not heard much about any of the fraternities or sororities on campus, so I don't imagine that have any significant impact on students who are not members. I do know that many hold standards for grades and hold study sessions, which has a very good impact of the grades of the members.
