Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

CSUN’s security network has a strong presence on campus. As part of its security network, CSUN also hires and trains students to become CSOs (community service officers). After talking with a CSO for only a few minutes, you will see that they take their job very seriously. Their primary duties are with CSUN’s escort services that offer escorts to any student from dusk until 11 p.m. on campus and at the dorms. Except for the occasional stolen bike, not many infractions occur at CSUN. Most students agree, however, that if any wrong-doing occurs, it won’t be on campus, it will be at the fun but crazy University Apartments.

The University Apartments, otherwise known as the dorms, have taken steps to increase security at the dorms by using CSOs to patrol the parking structure, parking lots, dorm buildings, and Satellite Student Union. At night, the CSOs close down all but two entrances to the dorms, and request that students show their housing ID card to enter the dorms. Students must also register or check-in any guests entering the dorms with the CSOs. The most commonly occurring transgressions are stolen bikes, stolen bike parts or cars being keyed. (Tip: Get a bike where the seat is removable and take it with you because no one wants to steal a bike with a missing seat.) And just to be safe, if you live on the first floor, don’t keep anything on the balcony and lock its door.

Safety and Security at Northridge

I believe that not enough is being done to ensure that students and faculty are safe at school especially during the night time when there are night classes. I myself always take night classes and I rarely see any police officers or security guards around campus. However, their emergency response is excellent.

Safe, but Still Watch Your Back

CSUN is generally a safe place to walk, however, there have been incidents of people coming off of our public campus to flee police or to threaten the safety of the students. Luckily, CSUN has a great police station on campus and an organization that will walk students to their dorms or cars (for night classes only) at your request.
