Local Atmosphere

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

CSUN is part of the mesh of bustling cities that make up the San Fernando Valley, just over the hill from Los Angeles. It has city-life written all over it. Economically speaking, CSUN floats between two financially different communities. Reseda, which is South of CSUN, is a bit rundown, but Granda Hills, North of CSUN, is one of the most upscale communities in the Valley. There are five grocery stores in close proximity to the school, and other places including Target, Office Max, Rite Aid, and coffeeshops are nearby. Since things are so close together, you will find that some students walk or ride their bikes to the mall, movie theater, or grocery stores, although the majority of students have cars and find it more convenient to drive.

For the most part, CSUN students agree that Northridge lacks the youth and edginess of a college town. However, in many ways, the town has shaped itself around the college and its students. For example, most of the bars in town offer a college night, and most restaurants offer a student discount. Since there are a limited number of college hangouts in Northridge, it’s best to go to LA to party every once in awhile. Aside from clubs and bars, LA also offers many museums, a zoo, and places to visit, like Universal City Walk, which Northridge does not. In many ways, CSUN students have the best of both worlds because they can experience the excitement of LA, and escape from the madness.

Nice Neighborhood

Northridge is a suburb of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley. It's in a nice neighborhood. I think residents of the Valley are proud to have CSUN as their own. Most of the students are from the Valley themselves and find it easy to live at home and commute to school.

Atmosphere of Local Diversity

Northridge has just about everything. Depending on the type of person you are, everything in in walking distance. I've lived here for almost 3 years, and I have been able to manage without the use of a car or bus, although I do own a bicycle. Northridge has several grocery stores such as Vons, Ralphs, and Albertsons. There is a variety of eateries, and most of them are located on Reseda Blvd. For example, there is an Irish Pub, Alcapulco, several sushi restaurants, etc. The biggest attraction thaat i love is the Northridge Fashion Center. It is a mall surrounded by a Movie Theatre and more restaurants.

Northridge is located in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, that means there is entertainment in every direction. The school itself is minutes away from the Northridge Fashion Center mall and for the more outdoor lovers, there are numerous hiking trails within ten minutes of the school in the north and south direction. The city is somewhat secluded from downtown Los Angeles so it is a lot more peaceful and there are less distractions. The only downside of Northridge is the summertime weather, it gets to be well into one hundred degrees. Other than that it is a safe, academic, and entertaining environment.
