Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students at CSUN have the option of living in the dorms all four years, although many chose to live off campus. Others who are not chosen in the lottery are then obligated to move off campus. Looking for off-campus housing is easy because the college is surrounded by apartment complexes. The apartments range from inexpensive to pricey. The features of each complex vary as well. Apartments may have fitness centers, barbeque areas, swimming pools and hot tubs, laundry units, covered parking, central air and heating, and some complexes even offer to pay your water and gas utilities. Northridge is a bit more expensive than the surrounding area, so if money is a concern, then try to find a complex built before 1985 because all these buildings offer rent control. A one-bed/one-bath apartment may only cost $600. However, if you have a pet, then you will have a more difficult time finding an apartment because many buildings do not allow them.

Ideally, try to move into an apartment with roommates because it is cheaper. However, if that doesn’t work out, there is a housing office that helps students find roommates and a place to live after the dorms. Remember that even neighboring apartments can have extremely different policies. While some places fine you for having late-night parties, other complexes forgive the random gathering, but just don’t make it a habit and you should be okay. The best thing is to ask around and find out which buildings suit you the best.

The Beauty of the Big Bucks

Beautiful housing, just too darn expensive. I recently went looking for off campus apartments, because i thought the dorms were too expensive. Unfortunately, the dorms were the cheapest housing available near the campus. Pros: they are beautiful, spacious, and close to the campus. Cons: they were to expensive, and in my opinion, wasn't the worth the money. For a two bedroom is what a good $2100 which was just too expensive, or maybe that just me.

It Is Okay.

I haven't lived on or off campus, but this summer I did consider getting an apartment with 2 friends. A lot of the apartments were nice and well maintained, but some were a bit too pricy. They were around 1200 for a 1 bedroom excluding utilities. We found one plenty nice ones but most of them only admitted 2 people for a 1 bedroom apartment. As college students, 600 dollars plus utilities was a lot for us so we just decided to keep commuting.
