Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

All CSUN students, reguardless of status, are allowed to park, but just because you buy a parking permit doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed a spot. Since the majority of CSUN students commute to school, parking is hot issue on campus. Currently, CSUN is building a second four-level parking structure in the primary parking sector which should deflate the stress bubble around those students who jam to school early for a spot. Parking fluctuates throughout the day. It is worse from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. when the majority of students are taking classes. However, if you arrive before the rush at 8 a.m., then the lot is practically empty and finding a spot will be easy. It will also be easy to find a parking spot at 12:30 p.m. when most of the students from the morning rush are leaving. However, parking becomes difficult again at 7 p.m. when night classes start. Parking is difficult in the beginning of the semester and at the beginning of the week, but by the end of the semester and by Friday, the process is painless.

A parking permit for the semester costs $126, but you can buy a discounted permit for $80. This discounted permit will only allow you to park in a lot a mile from campus, at which point a shuttle comes every 10 minutes to take you the one-mile distance. If you can’t get a permit, then you can always struggle to find free residential parking, although this can be far from campus as well, but it’s worth it to many students. Despite the difficulty of finding a parking spot and the traffic in the surrounding area, most students find it liberating to have their own car.

Parking Availability

As a transfer student from South Los Angeles, I never realized how difficult it is for students who commute to CSUN to find a parking space off/on campus. On the fall of 2011 being the first semester as a transfer student I decided to avoid buying the very expensive parking permit and chose to instead park on the streets. However, I found myself running late to class due to the big campus which took time first to find a parking space and then time to arrive to my class which also took about 10 mins. So a week into school I decided to go and buy the $180 parking permit for the semester, WRONG IDEA!!! Just like on the streets, I spend time looking for availability parking spaces from the three major parking lots which by the way are always full. So in other words, it was pointless to buy a permit when I had to continue searching for parking spaces that are NEVER available unless you get there about 45 mins before your class starts. This is ridiculous.

Did You See the Line?

Parking the first week of school and finals would make most student cry. Many of the students are all showing up late, and at the same time which makes parking on campus pitiful. Parking is pricey, and it is better to buy a year pass than a semester. Parking lots are on the out skirts of campus, so they are farely accessible. All the lots have an elevator. If caught without a permit a student will be fined under $100.
