Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The few students who are sports enthusiasts are so vocal about their passion that they’ll almost convince you that the whole school is just like them. But just the opposite is true—Sac State students aren’t really into campus sports. Most games have lots of empty seats, and a lot of students don’t pay attention to the teams. It’s entirely possible to go to Sac State for four years and not go to a single game or let the sports element impact your life in any way. If you live in the dorms, you’ll probably be more aware of the sports scene, but considering only five percent of students here live in the dorms, the chances of that are not very high. First-year students who come in the fall semester usually think the school is very sports-minded because of Homecoming season when the Causeway Classic football game against UC Davis occurs—a prominent sporting event featuring a longstanding rivalry between the two schools. But school spirit peaks when fall semester begins, and it dies down quickly thereafter. However, school spirit would increase dramatically if Sac State’s high-profile teams had more winning games. Women’s teams have some really great seasons, but they don’t usually get the fanfare that men’s teams get. If more students lived on campus, sports would probably be bigger as well. But the fact remains that Sac State is all about the commute, not on-campus unity.

Sports Could Be Better

Sacramento State University varsity sports teams are awesome, but do not always get the support they deserve. Our facilities and trainers are top notch just like our players. There are only two main events that our varsity teams get full support from the school one being the Causeway Classic football game against University of California, Davis and the Causeway Classic Track & Field Meet also against University of California, Davis.

School Spirit With Football Games

Football games seem to attract many fans/students on campus and local Sacramento individuals.Pre-game festivities are always fun and there are lots of people participating. The school colors of greeen and gold are worn. Our hornet mascot always livens the crowd and people become excited. Our cheerleaders and dance team show their support as well by appearing in a few performances out on the field.

Most Popular Sports

Football is the most popular varsity sport. Intramurals don’t really have rabid fans, but a lot of people participate—mostly basketball, football, and indoor soccer. A lot of people show up to intramurals to support friends, and sometimes that amounts to a lot of people, but typically, the crowd isn’t large.

Most Overlooked Teams

Some teams don’t sell many tickets, but not necessarily because they’re unpopular. It’s just because they don’t have that many games a semester. Gymnastics, for example, has about a handful of ticketed sporting events a year. Women’s games usually don’t draw the same crowds as the men’s football and basketball games either.

School Spirit

Sac State could definitely use some help in the school spirit department, but every once in a while, the spirit bug comes around. This usually happens during football games or graduation ceremonies and then quickly dies down when class is back in session. Nevertheless, there are many students who are happy to be at Sac State; they just stay relatively quiet about it. Many transfer students from other schools notice how low-key Sac State is, especially compared to Bay Area campuses. Because Sac State is a little low on strong campus culture, campus traditions and legends are also noticeably low.

Getting Tickets

Football and basketball sell the most tickets, so don’t wait to get them, especially during Homecoming and the Causeway Classic games. Other varsity sports often draw respectable crowds, but it’s rare for most games to be sold out too quickly.

Best Place to Take a Walk

American River Bike Trail

Did You Know? The school hosted U.S. Olympic Track and Field trials twice consecutively in 2000 and 2004.
