Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There’s a lot of food on campus, and if you like commercialized fast food, you’ll be happy. Burger King, TOGO’s, Gordito Burrito, and others provide a familiar dining experience that’s no more or less healthy than most other places in the world of American dining. Just be prepared for the lines, which are longest in the afternoon. Tens of thousands of students attend Sac State, and they all get hungry. You’ll frequently find yourself eating at your second or third choice because the line for the first one was just too long. Though many students don’t dislike the available food, they wish for less mainstream and healthier options. Vending machines and student stores sell food and drinks as well, some for ridiculously cheap prices, but most are certainly not filling. If you want a meal, Doritos and Gatorade just won’t cut it. Residential undergrads are in a bad way if they want their money’s worth with the meal plans. The credit on the meal cards is broken down into points, and students who want to convert points into vouchers so they can eat in places besides the Dining Commons get a raw deal. The conversion rate is unfavorable because vouchers cost a lot of points, so carriers can stretch out their credit farther just by sticking to the Dining Commons. Consequently, dorm rats are stuck with Dining Commons food, which most agree isn’t too bad, but eating at the same place all the time gets boring. This situation isn’t a factor for many students, though, because the vast majority of the Sac State student body lives off campus and, thus, isn’t required to purchase a meal plan.

Dining Halls

They changed the look of the dining halls and it looks great but the food is still the same. Not that great but it passes.

Beware of the Burger King

I got sick from a burger at the Burger King, so I avoid that. There are other options such as a Round Table Pizza, Jamba Juice, and a variety of vending machines. I find the vending machine food to be less dangerous than much of the prepared foods.

Facts

24-Hour Dining None
Off-Campus Places to Use Flex Money None
Special Options Sometimes privately owned trucks or tents are parked or set up in front of Eureka Hall by the Quad. They often change from semester to semester, and some semesters, they’re not there at all. Most recently, a Leatherby’s ice cream tent was there, but a few semesters back, a Roli-Roti chicken truck was in its place. There are catering places on campus as well, like Tarts and Truffles ([916] 278-6935) and Campus Caterers ([916] 278-6786), both of which are located in the Union. They like students to call ahead for orders. Food and candy are sold at the Hornet Bookstore and the Union Store.
Did You Know? Currently, you can only use your meal plan credits at the Dining Commons and a few other select places. If you want something from any of the other campus dining locations, you'll either have to pay cash or exchange some of your meal plan credits for "vouchers" (though most students recommend against buying vouchers). The University is working to expand the list of places to use your meal plan, however.
