Tips to Succeed
  • Don’t put so much stock in teacher-rating Web sites—just pay attention to the syllabus and turn in work on time, no matter whom your professor is.
  • Don’t register for too many units if you have a job too.
  • Get hard classes out of the way first.
  • If you slack off too often, you’ll be unprepared when you actually have to do something hard.
  • Keep up with the reading.
  • Make some private time for yourself to relax—periodic laziness can be a good thing.
  • Meet with your advisor often.
  • Take the Writing Proficiency Exam sooner rather than later.
  • Use your student ID on the bus to save yourself gas money and parking-space headaches.
  • When you plan your schedule, make room for social time.

Great School, Needs More Opportunity

I like the school, the campus, and the people, however I certainly wish that there were more clubs that were available and popular. Budget cuts are taking away a lot of clubs and departments that are important to students. For me, it's the foreign language program!

Athletic Facilities

The athletic facilities for the football and track program here are to die for! The fieldhouse for those teams are amazing and they have their own athletic trainers and weight trainers, including a personal weight room. The locker rooms lead right out to the track/football field. And the track is one of the fastest tracks in the world, they held the Olympic trial s there one year.

Facts

Traditions
  • The Calaveras Station: The Calaveras Station is the campus literary magazine that’s published by the English department. It gets its name from the English building, Calaveras Hall, and strives to produce highbrow reading material. So if your literature tastes are more refined, you should give it a try. If your writing is sophisticated enough, you could even see your short story, essay, or poem published in it.
  • Chickens and Squirrels: For years, Sac State was well-known as a place where chickens and squirrels ran freely around campus. Many newcomers were surprised at how unafraid these creatures were of human contact. Most people loved them, but some people, like President Gonzalez, felt differently. A few semesters back, the chicken population drastically decreased. Depending on whom you talk to, there are different reasons for this. The most popular rumor is that the president had them rounded up and killed. The other is that he had them sent to a chicken farm. Before this mass chicken disappearance occurred, however, he made no secret about how he wasn’t the birds’ biggest fan. Say your prayers for the squirrels.
  • The Quads: There are some areas on campus that many students use all the time, they just don’t know what the official names for these places are. One place is the Main Quad by the River Front Center. It’s a grassy area with trees, and students often study or lie down beneath the shady canopies or have picnics. It’s quite popular. The thing is, if you ask most of them what the name of this place is, they look at you in confusion and say something like, “I don’t know . . . the grassy area?” More students, however, know the proper name of the Library Quad. This is the area where Greek organizations and other clubs aggressively rush students during the first two weeks of the semester. Campus activities like rallies, guest speakers, and other events take place here. In conversation, if you mention “the Quad” to students, they’ll almost always think you’re referring to the one by the library instead of the other one.
  • The State Hornet: Sac State’s official campus newspaper is the State Hornet, which comes out every Wednesday when school’s in. It’s free for students, but after a student’s first copy of a single issue, he or she is supposed to pay more than a dollar for another one. The thing is, the city newspaper, the Sacramento Bee, is a larger publication that costs 50 cents. Why pay more than a buck for a smaller paper that comes out once a week when you can pay 50 cents for a larger daily one with more stories? Students have been asking that question for years.
Urban Legends
  • After the chickens mysteriously disappeared (true again), a food truck started coming to campus selling fried chicken.
  • The chickens that used to wander around campus (this part is true) were left there years ago as part of a fraternity prank and started reproducing.
  • The chickens were left on campus because of a University experiment.
  • The library was built backwards because builders read the blueprints wrong.
  • The Sutter Hall dorm was originally intended as a temporary structure, but the campus still uses it decades later.
