Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • A bike
  • Bum a ride off a friend
  • Sacramento buses and light rail - they are free if you bring your ID
  • Your own two feet (with shoes on, of course!)
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • A cab ride to the airport costs about $45.
  • Here are some services that offer shuttles to the airport. They’ll take you there from campus, or from just about anywhere in the city. It’s common for them to want several hours’ notice in advance, though, so give them about a day. Direct Line: (916) 727-0403 - Super Shuttle: (800) 258-3826

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The best thing about public transportation is that there are several options. The Hornet Express shuttle is good for students living near campus, but more comprehensive transportation is provided by the Sacramento Regional Transit system, which consists of buses and light rail trains that zip throughout the city. It’s very convenient, and the best part is it’s free for Sac State students with a valid school ID. It also saves you money on gas. There are also public transportation systems that take you to some surrounding counties, like the El Dorado and Roseville transit systems. The worst thing about public transportation is that it can make your commute a lot longer than it should be. It can take an hour to go about 10 miles because the bus constantly stops to let passengers on and off. And you’ll more than likely have to transfer from one bus to another, which takes even more time. A student traveling to school will often have to get off one bus, walk to another bus stop, and wait several minutes for a new bus. Also, bus drivers and other passengers can be inconsiderate sometimes. Bus riders, especially older and handicapped ones, fight each other for front seats—but that can be entertaining for some students. Bus drivers are notoriously apathetic about passenger complaints as well. It’s not uncommon for a bus driver to yell “too bad” to an unhappy rider who missed his stop.

Expensive to Park

The only transportation is the light rail and buss system, which can be unreliable I am told.

I personally take my car to school, as this allows me to get to my job faster when I get off of work. Also, it is safer to take than light rail, which depending on what area you're riding through, can have some disturbing people sitting next to yu.

Parking permits are expensive though, and their price rises each year.
