On campus the use of drugs and alcohol is pretty much prohibited. I am not sure how heavily monitored it is in the apartments. There is a policy enforcement for no drinking while you are on Calvin's campus or representing Calvin. I do not think it is too much of an issue, but in the apartments it might be.
There are two dining halls which pretty much offer the same options but open at slightly different times. There is a lot to chose from and you are put on a dining hall plan for your first two years at Calvin. Junior and Senior year you don't have the meal plan option, but you have the chance to purchase a block plan for some extra meals throughout the year. Otherwise you pretty much cook all your meals. A lot of students like to eat out on Sundays because the dining hall options are not the best on Sundays. There are also bonus bucks that you get with the meal plan which you can use a Johnny's a small store that you can purchase some fast food, drinks, chips, milk, snacks, etc. You can also just purchase items from there.
There is not a lot of campus crime that I am aware of. You are pretty safe on Calvin's campus, safety patrol officers are on call through the night and monitor the campus. I feel I'm pretty safe on campus.
Agreed, Calvin generally feels very safe. Cars will be broken into here and there but that's generally done by Calvin students and not the residents of GR. The campus itself feels very safe, day or night.
It is a little bit hard to be at Calvin if you do not know people initially. A lot of people are CRC and from Christian Private Schools. It is hard to fit in if you do not fall into a those categories. However, it is necessary to make some friends because otherwise you will have a hard time living in the residence halls. The facilities are good, and the academic programs. There are a lot of research opportunities and opportunities for people if they are fortunate enough to get into the honors program. The professors are really helpful as well; just be sure to ask questions in class or talk to them.
The athletic center is really good. It has a climbing wall, swimming pool, work out room, track, etc. The library is about five floors, the bottom floor is a computer lab. There are a few campus events, but if you want to figure out something to do there are usually events on your floors if you live in the residence halls. Otherwise, taking the bus to EastTown, or getting involved in clubs lets you have a lot of opportunities. There are not a lot of campus wide events or school thrown events. The student hangouts are the Johnny's which is a food place, and coffee shop on campus. Otherwise there is not a lot of hangouts. The apartments also have a few events each year, but a lot of times it is necessary to explore and figure out something to do with your friends.
