"Green" Initiatives
Canisius recently became a part of the Buffalo CarShare Initiative. Students-and anyone else who is part of the campus community-can rent an environmentally friendly vehicle to use. The cost is between $5 and $9 per hour of use, gas, and insurance included. A minivan and a pickup truck are also available, in addition to a regular car.
School Slang
  • Grupp: Grupp Fireside Lounge is located next to the Regis rooms in the student center.
  • Health Science: This building is about a five-minute walk from Canisius, where many education and physical therapy classes are held. ROTC offices are also located there.
  • The KAC: The Koessler Athletic Center
  • Palisano: Palisano Pavilion is a recreational building that includes a cafĂ©, computers, ping-pong tables, pool tables, comfy chairs, and a sound system for movies. Also, it has a post office and RHA (Residence Hall Association) office on the tunnel level.
  • Petey Griffin: The school mascot
  • Regis: There are two large rooms for events and guest lecturers on the top floor of the Richard Winter Student Center called "Regis North" and "Regis South."
  • Tunnels : Interconnected underground hallways that run throughout the main campus. They're wonderful in nasty weather. Unfortunately, there are no tunnels to the Health Science Center or Lyons Hall.
  • The Undercroft : Church basement
Traditions
  • Griffins After Dark: Fun events are held in the late hours on campus and usually involve some sort of game with an object that glows in the dark.
  • Mr. Canisius: A competition among Canisius men that involves dancing and various talent contests to determine who will be selected as "Mr. Canisius."
  • Quad Party: A large festival that celebrates the end of classes for the spring semester.
Urban Legends
The fourth floor of Lyons Hall is haunted by a nun.
Favorite Things To Do
There are plenty of events sponsored by clubs and organizations to keep students entertained year-round. But on their own, students enjoy hanging out in Palisano where there are pool tables, pingpong tables, a lounge area, and large screen and sound system. In nice weather, students spend time in the quad. Both on- and off-campus housing are popular locations for socializing.

Clubs and Organizations on Campus
Canisius is very encouraging about new student clubs; hence, there are tons of clubs and organizations on campus. As the neat little brochure from the Office of Programming and Leadership Development (CPLD) says, "your toughest decision will be what to do first!" Truly, it is the "toughest decision." There are 28 academic organizations, nine communication clubs, 13 cultural clubs, 16 honor societies, 12 performing arts groups, 25 recreational clubs (not counting individual intramural sports), and 26 social- or service-related clubs. The most active organizations are Unity, SIFE (Students of Free Enterprise), C-Block, The Griffin (school newspaper), Afro-American Society, Little Theatre, Project Conservation, Student Programming Board (SPB), intramural sports, Undergraduate Student Association (USA), and the Residence Hall Association (RHA).

  • It seems like a new club pops up all the time. There's even a Quidditch team. That's right. Quidditch.
