Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For a Division III academical school, varsity sports aren’t a big draw. It’s difficult for Carleton to field competitive teams because the academic standards are so high. There are a few varsity teams that capture the hearts of fans; the women’s basketball team continually holds a top ten national ranking, and the women’s swimming and cross country teams sent athletes to the U.S. Olympic team in Athens. On a down note, the football team loses more than it wins.

IMs generate a lot of fun and camaraderie, especially as a national ultimate Frisbee powerhouse. Both men and women’s teams regularly are in the hunt for the national championship. It’s not surprising that the biggest draw at the football stadium is the epic battle between Carleton’s top two men’s teams, CUT (Carleton Ultimate Team) and GOP (Gods of Plastic). Frisbee enthusiasm soars as hundreds play in the fall and spring. Broomball is big in the winter. Carleton floods the Baldspot, the centerfield on campus, so that boot-clad Carls can run around on the death trap ice rink and flail at a volleyball with brooms. It’s fun, but falling down happens a lot. Traditional IM sports such as soccer and basketball are offered as well, but they usually have to fight with the diehard Frisbonians for field and court space.

Jocks and ALSO Nerds

I know little about varsity sports, but many seem to be happy in their participations in them. What I like best about SPORTS is that all the people can participate. We have a rollicking intramural sports culture and many of the club sports are supremely welcoming. Shout outs go to ultimate frisbee, which is let's just say a little bit kind of popular. We also have some quidditch.

Fun but Insignificant

The sports teams are all fairly well supported by the school, and a lot of people play either varsity or IM sports, so it's not too difficult. Mostly, though, people who aren't on a given team don't much care about how they do--there's very little pride or shame about our athletic accomplishments.

They Are Better Than They Are Given Credit for

Carleton is a academically rigorous school, but that doesn't been we are athletically challenged. The men's basketball and soccer programs are always strong, as is the swimming, cross country and track programs. The women's basketball and football teams are competitive, though their records may not show it. Sporting events are really fun to attend.

Most Overlooked Teams

The baseball team competes in one of the most competitive Division III leagues in America. While they lose their fair share of games, they at least put up a fight and surprise a few teams.

School Spirit

Students are proud to say they go to Carleton, and no one is ever ashamed of wearing Carleton’s maize and blue colors. The basic premise for Carleton school spirit is that if a sports team is winning, student fans will show up. During the women’s basketball team’s successful run, fans have turned out in droves to see the Knights sweep their way through the MIAC conference. Fans at games wear their “Bleed Blue” T-shirts, the makeshift pep band jokes its way through fight songs, and the famous Carleton Male Cheerleaders run around topless on the hardwood. As the football team wins more games, there’s an increasing number of Carleton fans going to the games with the same enthusiasm.

Getting Tickets

Every varsity sporting event is free at Carleton unless the team hosts an NCAA Tournament game. Women’s basketball games are generally pretty packed, but there’s plenty of room at the other sporting events.
