Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Carleton has an interesting set of dorms. No one room in Burton Hall is the same, and it’s impossible to find your way around the twisting columns of Evans Hall. In the winter, it’s nice to live in Burton, Sevy, or Davis because they’re all connected to a dining hall, the post office, and the Snack Bar. If you don’t go to class, you won’t have to go outside. Goodhue is the farthest dorm from any academic buildings, but it’s the closest to the Rec Center. People say Musser is cool because you can draw on the tile walls with markers, but it’s really the last resort dorm. All floors are coed with a blend of freshmen and upperclassmen. This is the building block for social life at Carleton. Many students that shared a floor find themselves getting houses together as seniors. For freshmen, the dorms provide an opportunity to get involved with their community. The only complaint from upperclassmen is that freshmen stay up all night in the hallways playing UNO.

Interest houses provide an alternative to dorms. From Asia House to Farm House, there seems to be one for just about every hobby, ethnicity, or life philosophy. For those that have a Dungeons & Dragons fetish, there’s Sci-Fi House; for those ultra-feminists, there’s WA (Women’s Awareness).

Housing Is Fine, Housing Administration Is Not

The actual housing at Carleton covers a pretty good range in terms of both age and quality (some older dorms have bats, faulty plumbing, etc, but the newer buildings are great, and everything's pretty well taken care of), with the upperclassmen housing options coming out on top. The housing office, however, is not the best to work with, as they seem to be more concerned with paperwork than the students.

Housing on Campus

Housing at Carleton really is never that bad. Because students generally live on campus all four years, even the worst dorms are significantly nicer and more spacious than any big university dorms I've visited.

And It Was Good.

Though living in Musser is oddly reminiscent of living in a high security women's prison, most housing at Carleton went better than expected. There is a lot of complaining about dorms like Watson and Goodhue, but I have lived in both and I can report that they are both nice! Upperclassmen housing gets better -- triples, quints, and quads, oh my! and also better locations. The holy on campus grail is a town house your senior year. Make friends with someone who will be randomly assigned a great draw number.

Cleaning Service

Public areas in dorms and most houses. Maintenance does a good job of keeping public bathrooms clean, especially after the weekend. Private bathrooms in dorms are not cleaned.

Did You Know?

Two students get paid for 10 hours of work a week to live in Dacie Moses House (the cookie house) to shop for cookie supplies and make brunch on Sundays.

Evans Hall was originally an all-women’s dorm. Architects designed the dorm to have confusing columns and stairways in order to discourage males from seeking out females.

Carleton is currently building two new dorms: Cassat Hall and Memorial Hall.
