Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s pretty convenient to bring your own computer to Carleton but not a necessity. The majority of students do bring them, and it’s a safe bet that at least one roommate would bring one to school. The network is well maintained, and they usually do service on it on Friday nights when the least amount of students need to use them. Most professors take advantage of the interconnected network and place coursework and reading material in class folders on the Internet. E-mail is the preferred method of communication, so make sure to check your inbox on a regular basis.

Public computer labs are generally crowded, especially during finals. It’s best to get there early and claim it by leaving your work open at the computer with notes, books, pillow, and sleeping bag. The biggest problem with printers is the frequent toner shortage due to the amount of printing that’s done. However, the computing staff fixes printer and computer difficulties in no time. For those with laptops, the library and a couple of other buildings have Ethernet ports that are easily accessible. Laptops are the best bet as far as having your own computer goes—it is more convenient to carry your computer around campus than to have a large PC bolted to your desk.

Dual-Boot Is Awesome

Carleton's computers are great because almost all of them have a dual-booting capability. That is, they can boot up using either Mac or using Windows. This provides for great flexibility for the student. Also, printing is free, so that's awesome.

Always Available

Most students bring their own laptops and there is a campus wide wifi network. Ethernet internet in the dorms is incredibly fast. Computer labs are always available and never really that crowded. All the computers are almost brand new and dual boot OS X and Windows 7. Printing is also free (for black and white), which is nice.

Computers Good, Printers Bad

Computer labs are plentiful on campus -- you can find one in pretty much any academic building. Macs are more widespread than PCs, but both can be found. You can get wireless for your laptop almost anywhere, though it's spotty in some of the dorms. The printing situation could be better; you often have to run between 2-3 different buildings before you find a printer that isn't malfunctioning.
