Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Drugs seem to linger in the background at Carleton. There’s rarely anything harder than marijuana present at parties. That isn’t to say that pot doesn’t play a role in defining the campus infrastructure. There’s a large contingent of hippies at Carleton. Students come in their freshman year as clean-cut, East Coast preps and graduate as unshaven, sandal wearing, dreadlocked environmental studies concentrators. One thing closely associated with this tie-dyed community is the use of marijuana. Sure, you may come here and swear you’ll never touch the stuff, but there’s something about Northfield that has the power to change just about anyone into a cannabis crazy, flower-powering hippie.

There’s not an overwhelming presence of drugs because it’s very difficult to do and keep up your grades. Those that smoke weed excessively or get into harder drugs usually find themselves failing out by the end of the year. There’s also a small contingent of people that take academically-enhancing drugs such as Ritalin before big tests and exams. Small towns in Minnesota are notorious for having basement meth labs, and Northfield is no exception. If you plan to live off campus, you’ll no doubt have your landlord seriously tell you that meth labs in the apartment are completely off limits. Needless to say, there have been no meth-related arrests of Carleton students.

Lots of Drinking, Not Much Else

Carleton is a very wet campus, but there's little pressure to drink if you don't want to. Weed shows up from time to time, but mostly it's just alcohol.

I'm Still the Wrong Person to Ask

If you want to get high you absolutely can, but I don't usually. If you're not being careless or a dumbass, no one will call you on it. As a townie, let me say that all sources confirm dealers are better in town than on campus. If you want to be doing harder stuff, you're in the wrong place (or wrong decade - heroin in the 2000s and meth in the 90s).

Common but Not Expected

There is fairly low level of peer pressure to drink or do drugs. Part of this is because of the existence of substance free floors in almost every dorm. Most people are responsible and security does a great job of looking after people. There are rarely serious problems.
