Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Far a small campus, Carleton has plenty of unique facilities to go around. The Rec Center is tremendous. You can play all the free pool and ping pong you want in the Great Space, and you can go swimming at the pool in West Gym. The only thing you will have to pay for here is laundry, food, copies, school supplies, and textbooks. There are free movies, sporting events, concerts, and numerous other activities. The Cave is a cool place to go for a Friday night concert, and you can often chill with the band that’s playing after their set. The Cave is a small venue, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in atmosphere.

Carleton makes sure to keep all of its services up to date and modern. Computers in the public labs are recycled for faster models every couple of years. The library is constantly searching for ways to expand its database and collection. The maintenance staff is dedicated to their jobs, and they’ve been featured in the Star Tribune for taking money out of their own paychecks to create a scholarship fund. Science labs are never lacking, and all classrooms have access to overhead computer projectors and television sets. As far as facilities go, Carleton puts your $42,000 tuition to good use.

Myriad Options for Every Style

Carleton has something for everyone and somethings that everyone should experience. Be it during nights in the observatory, an afternoon jog through the Arb, 20 pages into a paper at the Libe, or a coffee break in Sayles, you will find Carleton facilities are well maintained and modern. Campus is increasingly environmentally sustainable. The campus is not overly manicured, but contains some extraordinary biomes.

Something for Everyone

Carleton has been upgrading its facilities a lot in the past few years. There is a brand new theater/dance/cinema building with new computer labs, lounges and classrooms as well. There are three different recreation centers on campus, two pools and many playing fields (perfect for lots of frisbee games). Sayles, our campus center, is pretty comfy and serves food until the late hours of the night. The library is top notch, and very cozy in the winter. Almost all of the academic buildings have some sort of lounge and/or computer lab for students to use, so there are lots of places to study. Last but not least, we also have an observatory, the oldest college-run pub in the country and a nice concert hall.

Great Rec Center, Library, Student Center, and ARBORETUM

We have beautiful facilities: an amazing rec center with a climbing wall, exercise machines, indoor sports courts, etc. Our library (open until 1 am) is cozy and is organized by noise level so that you can find the perfect study spot. Our student center offers hot food until midnight and is a great study spot, but is pretty drafty in the winter. The best thing about Carleton is the well-maintained arboretum with miles of trails that are amazing for running and skiing.

Favorite Things To Do

Baking cookies at Dacie Moses House is a long-standing Carleton tradition. In her will, Dacie Moses gave her house to Carleton with the stipulation that those that lived in it must keep it open 24 hours a day to whomever wanted to come and bake cookies. Beside baking, Carls love to do a number of other activities, such as see up-and-coming bands at the Cave, host their own radio show on the campus radio station, and play Frisbee on the Bald Spot.

Besides homework and going to class? Watching free movies four nights a week in Olin 149, free pool in upper Great Space, seeing bands perform at The Cave, free gourmet dinners at Culinary House, baking cookies at Dacie Moses House, working out at the Rec Center, or grabbing a late snack at the Snack Bar.
