Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Since Carleton is a small private college, administrators agreed not to have a Greek system. In the spirit of the college, fraternities and sororities have rarely been considered and students never seem to mind the lack of it. The consensus at Carleton is that frats breed disharmony, cliques, and social segregation. Carls are all about equal opportunity parties and, thus there is no name checking at doors, turning away of groups, or only allowing males in if they are accompanied by three or more females (as frats
often do).

Carls are firm believers that, because of the lack of a
Greek system, there is less social pressure to fit into a “group” or clique. There are individuals abound at Carleton, and there is no set way to behave, dress, or talk. Seniors hang out with freshmen; there’s virtually no hazing (except for cross-country and Frisbee); and you aren’t looked down upon if you spend a Friday night in the library, because, hey, everyone at Carleton has those nights. If you’re looking for a Greek scene, then you obviously shouldn’t come to Carleton. If you’re looking for a laid-back, chill, undemanding social atmosphere, then Carleton is the place for you.

There Is NONE!

This is one of the main reasons I came to Carleton! The lack of a Greek System is awesome. Even better, social life is no worse because of it! There are still town houses on campus that party nearly every weekend and off campus houses are similar in that regard

There are no fraternities or sororities at Carleton. That said, many of the sports teams take up the slack and host parties in bigger rooms (not dorm rooms) on campus. Also, there are many parties thrown by ordinary students that attract tons of people.

There is no Greek life. The social scene is the same as any other school I would imagine. It's a smaller campus so you'll get to know more of the student body.

Facts

Did You Know?

The closest thing Carleton has to a fraternity is the Carleton Beirut League, which invites all sexes and ethnicities to participate in fun Beirut action every Wednesday for a small fee every term.

Interest Houses replace fraternities and sororities on campus, giving students a less cult-like sense of friendship
with like-minded people.
