Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The biggest stigma about Carleton is the non-attractive students, but this is not completely true. The biggest issue with physical appearance is the lack of time and care most Carls put into it. However, the longer you’re at Carleton, the hotter the campus becomes. Whether these are the “Carleton goggles” or your parameters for attraction have simply readjusted, by the time you leave you’ll have a new understanding of what it means to "have a personality." The campus isn’t overly promiscuous, but that’s not to say it’s full of prudes either. Everyone has different views on sex, but students here generally  worry more about their studies than trying to get some action.

Carleton’s main focus is academics, not preening. You won’t find girls walking around in mini-skirts, halter-tops, and six-inch heels. Girls can’t spend hours in front of the mirror doing makeup and still keep up with their coursework. This isn’t to say that all Carls are ugly—there are some very good-looking people—but the average Carl is average-looking. Admittedly, it doesn’t do much to encourage good looks. If you think personality and moustaches are sexy, then Carleton is the place for you. But if you like mini-skirts or muscle-bound jocks, you might be better off elsewhere.

I Find This Question Irrelevant and Rather Offensive.

Your college decision should never ever depend on dating prospects or sex prospects, and least of all the physical attractiveness of the students. I refuse to answer the question posed, except to say that each and every Carleton student is beautiful as a person.

Awkward Nerds

Carleton is a school of awkward nerds who are (for the most part) unconcerned with their appearances. It's great.

Nerdy and Fun

You won't find a lot of gorgeous guys or girls, but you will find a student body that is generally very intelligent, curious, nice, and engaging. Just depends what you find attractive.

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

Let's face it, the majority of Carleton's social scene is in the library. Most Carls are nerds, and nerds are nerds because they're smart and spend a lot of time studying. Most of the students running for senate spots ran on the platform to extend library hours on the weekend even though it already stays open until midnight. On the weekend, Carls do like to cut loose, though, and there are usually parties to be found either on campus or in off-campus houses. The lack of fraternities and sororities provides for a laid-back and chill social scene. Dorm floor life is amazing, and most students remain close with their freshman year floormates during their time at Carleton. There are some very socially inept people at Carleton, but usually they stick to the basement in the library and don't come out of hibernation until classes let out in the spring.

Hookups or Relationships?

For such a nerdy school, Carleton has a surprising number of hookups. It's not smart to hook up with a lot of guys or girls your freshman year—Carleton is a small school where everyone pretty much knows everyone else and rumors spread quickly. There are a number of major relationships, and people that are involved usually go into hiding and only spend time with each other. If you're looking to hookup at Carleton, just go after a senior during Spring Term. They don't care about reputation anymore and are generally just looking for a good time before graduation.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Parties are generally the best place to meet guys and girls if you're looking to hookup. If you're not into partying, Carleton's various student clubs and organizations are a great place to meet people. Carls looking for blondes usually go over to St. Olaf College's highly Norwegian campus, just across the Cannon River. You won't find many townies to hookup with at the bars unless you're into leather-clad bikers and people without teeth.

Dress Code

Carls are notorious for dressing down. During the winter, three pairs of long underwear and a parka is pretty much the norm. When it warms up, the usual is Birkenstocks, shorts, and a T-shirt. There are a few preps on campus, but in general the dress code is sloppy-casual at best.
