Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is always a party on the campus. Membership for the Carleton Beirut League is $20 per term. It guarantees beer pong every Wednesday until you are rolling on the floor. On the weekends, there are dance parties at Asia House, long underwear parties at CANOE House, and hippie-jam-band parties at Farm House. Although, they do tend to get crowded as the evening goes on. It’s fortunate there’s an excellent party scene because Northfield lacks in the nightlife department. There are no clubs and only two bars. However, the Twin Cities are only 45 minutes away.

Carleton parties are steeped with tradition. One second you are dancing at the Ebony party in the Sevy Tea Room, the next shirts are flying off as Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” comes on. Why? A long time ago someone thought taking off shirts when a Madonna song played was a good idea. It’s all about tradition. In the spring, Carleton adds another inning to America’s longest kegger/softball game. It begins at sunrise and doesn’t end until an inning for every year Carleton has been in existence is played. What keeps people interested for hours? Kegs at every base are imported throughout the day, paid for by local merchants and the college itself. Rotblatt has been featured in ESPN the Magazine, proving that beer and sports do mix. Carleton students study hard, but on the weekend they get out and have fun, especially in the spring.

Trivia Night at the Cow!

You should not come to Carleton for a ragin party scene; still, there are a fair number of nighttime social options, many of which reflect the Carleton academic humor. There are a few pubs in Northfield, including Froggy's and The Contented Cow, the latter of which features trivia competition every sunday. Nightlife is commonly friendly to those looking to drink and those who are not, regardless of age.

Pretty Laid-Back and Fun

Nightlife on weekends (Friday and Saturday nights) generally consists of drinking with your friends, whether in a party setting or just in someone's room. In general, it's pretty chill and comfortable. There are occasional campus-sponsored dances or parties that can be fun but also overwhelming. There are also a ton of performances and presentations to attend on any given weekend.

I'm the Wrong Person to Ask

There aren't any clubs in Northfield, though the bars are popular. I'm not a big party guy, but if I was I wouldn't be disappointed. I enjoy more drinking with friends, and there's plenty of that to be found. Progressives are fun for everyone, even mostly sober kids like me.

Facts

Club Crawler

You have to go outside of Northfield to go to a club.

Bar Prowler

Due to a town ordinance, Northfield is not allowed to have more bars than colleges. So there are two: Froggy Bottoms and the Contented Cow. But the Rueb and the Tavern are bars that have escaped the label of a bar by having other monetary means. The Rueb is an ice cream parlor and restaurant, and the Tavern makes more money from food.

Organization Parties

Carleton has blowout parties run by student organizations on campus. Everything from dances, bands, and theme parties happen on campus all the time. It isn't hard to find a party at Carleton unless it's close to finals.

J. Grundy’s Rueb ‘N’ Stein

The Rueb is the favorite hangout for Carls over 21. On a weekend, you won’t be able to get in the door without getting carded at this classic bar. Happy hour from 3:30 p.m.–6 p.m. every weekday has free appetizers and cheap drinks. Townies and Carls make up the Rueb’s primary customer base, with the occasional Ole hanging out at the upstairs bar. So don’t be surprised if a brawl breaks out. The Rueb is easily the best place to grab a drink in Northfield.

503 Division St. S.

The Tavern

The Tavern is mainly a geriatric hang out. It closes at 10 p.m. most nights, and the usual customer is well over 80 years old. If you’re looking for a good meal to go with your booze, the Tavern is a great place to come—just don’t expect to pick anyone up unless you’re into older people, really older people.

212 Division St. S.

(507) 663-0342

The Contented Cow

The Cow is a British-style pub aimed at an older age and is the perfect place to convince your professor to bring your grade up a point or two by ordering a pint—or two—of Guinness. You can also attend performances or sit out on the patio in summer or winter because it has a fireplace.

Froggy Bottoms is largely a St. Olaf hang out, but there’s karaoke and froggy Irish and specialty drinks.
