Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For a small town, Northfield has a good variety of restaurants. There are pizza places that all serve the same style pizza, so the prices are pretty low. Due to the large immigrant population, the Mexican cuisine is deliciously authentic and reasonably priced. El Tequila has revamped the restaurant to provide a comfortable eating environment. Las Delicias is a great place to grab a burrito, cream soda, and watch Telemundo soap operas. Just stay away from anything that has sausage. (They actually just cut up hot dogs and mix them with refried beans!)

Subway and Quizno’s lose much of their business to the healthier, better tasting, and equally priced Hogan Brothers. Domino’s Pizza has a difficult time competing with the family-owned pizza joints, but they do rake in sales with $6 pizza specials on Thursdays. The Carleton culture is so anti-McDonald’s that you’ll most likely be ostracized if you bring Big Macs onto campus. Taco Bell is always a Saturday afternoon hot spot, but their food pales in comparison to the abundant authentic Mexican cuisine. If you get tired of Northfield’s options, there’s a plethora of eclectic restaurants in the Twin Cities. If given the choice, you should explore the restaurants in St. Paul rather than Minneapolis, as St. Paul is 20 times easier to navigate than its twin city.

Good but Needs Better Variety

The food here is generally good, it just is very repetitive. Sayles cafe is open until midnight for anyone craving a late night snack and serves more traditional comfort foods than the dining halls. The dining halls try to serve healthy and environmentally friendly meals, but ironically, often times the desserts are the tastiest foods.

Northfield Is Small

Dining options in town are very limited. The food is nothing to complain about -- Hogan Bros. has awesome sandwiches, El Triunfo's Mexican food is great, there's a Chapati and a couple of Chinese restaurants, plus your usual fast food -- but you run out of options pretty quickly.

Ethnic Fare and Dependable Establishments

Northfield boasts not one but two authentic Indian restaurants who feature accessibility and reasonable prices. Carleton students love Hogan Brothers for their sandwiches and ecclectic atmosphere. Minnestrone, vegetarian chili, or beer cheese soup on a cold Minnesota eve never fail to hit the spot. Pizza and coffee houses aplenty can also be found along the main stretch.
