Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Carls don’t usually make it off campus until senior year, if at all. There’s only a certain amount of students able to live off campus. If a small amount of seniors apply, then a few juniors will be able to escape, too. There is never a problem finding houses and apartments above downtown stores, and there are plenty of houses that have one-year leases. Northfield Option is ideal for people that are sick of Carleton food, don’t want to share a bathroom with an entire floor, and deal with the strict parking regulations. It’s nice to have a car when you live off campus, but it’s not necessary. Having a bike to make it to class and go grocery shopping is much more important.

There are a few staple houses and apartments for Carleton students. Crack and Love House are adjacent to the Carleton townhouses, and the Barn and the Store are downtown apartments. Both are known to host a few wild shindigs. Since Northfield is such a small town, there are two or three prominent landlords that own nearly 75 percent of all rentable apartments and houses. Research your landlord by talking with previous residents to find out if they repair and refunds deposits. If you do the homework, you’ll enjoy a good place, home-cooked food, and your own bathroom.

Why Move Away from All the Fun?

Most Carleton students live on campus because there is sufficient housing, the dorms are user friendly, and off-campus stuff is reserved for upperclassmen.

Off Campus Housing

There is a fair amount of off campus housing within walking distance of campus that seniors regularly live in. In general, it's much cheaper than paying for room and board at Carleton. That said, many of the houses that are usually rented to students are kind of gross.
