Getting a Parking Permit
Carleton discourages students from bringing vehicles on campus. If you do bring one, they make you place it in Dead Storage unless you can prove you need the car for medical reasons, work, or religious purposes. Dead Storage means that you can't remove your car from the parking lot without giving a convincing reason. Dinner and a movie isn't a convincing reason according to the parking attendants
College Prowler Take
The three biggest complaints about Carleton are the weather, the food, and the parking. There’s nothing that anyone can do about the weather, and people complain about the food everywhere. But the parking at Carleton deserves every complaint it gets. If you live on campus and bring a car, you must place it in dead storage unless you have a valid reason to use it. If they find you using your car without permission, you’ll get ticketed. Campus security does actually patrol the streets near campus for Carleton cars. The college has two lots—by the Rec Center and the football stadium. Stadium parking is preferred because it’s closer, but both lots are far enough away from classes and dorms to discourage students from using them. There are ways around getting ticketed. You can park in campus lots after 5 p.m., and then park in the street during the day. You should move your car every day to avoid tickets. Some students even use St. Olaf bumper stickers to fool campus security (they can’t ticket visitors). You can’t leave your car overnight on the street in the winter because of snow removal. You can get a parking spot in one of the dorm lots if you can convince the college that you have to use your car every day, but it’s difficult and there’s a lot of red tape preventing you from getting spots. A car is nice if you’re an upperclassman, but freshmen and sophomores don’t need one. Come to school without a car, then decide if the hassle of parking is worth it.

It would be easy. There’s plenty of parking around, and the town of Northfield has no problem with you parking in it. However, the school bans students from having cars without an appropriate reason, like ‘I have to drive my grandmother who can’t see to physical therapy.’ They go so far to enforce this rule that they patrol the off-campus streets of Northfield and will run license plates they suspect. They’re extremely bad about parking and it’s possibly the worst aspect of this school if you have or want to have a car. But get used to cornfields and seeing the same sights everyday because, without a car, there’s not much to do that’s close by. |

Parking sucks. Basically, you can’t have a car here unless you have a reason, and even then, parking is expensive. |

If you live more than 200 miles away, you can park your car at the Rec Center, which is a ways away from most dorms. You also have to pay $50 a term to register it. It’s still quite nice to have a car. |

Parking isn’t so convenient because most of it is behind the Rec Center. It ends up being easier to just walk most of the time. |

If you park about a mile from the Student Union, they ticket like crazy. Really, until you’re 21 and going to the liquor store three days a week, you don’t need a car (the only decently-priced liquor store is in Dundas, 3.5 miles south of campus). |
