College Prowler Take

If you plan on staying in Northfield while you are here, there is no need to bring a car. Just about everything is within walking distance and Carleton’s Intercampus Shuttle can take you around town if you don’t feel like lacing up your sneakers. Getting to the Twin Cities, however, is another story. The Co-op only runs on the weekends, and is pretty slow because it stops at the Mall of America, Downtown St. Paul, and Uptown Minneapolis. You’re best bet is to take your own car or borrow a friend’s. Cab rides are expensive, and the bus is inconvenient. Carleton does have a ride share program, but it’s not widely publicized or used.

Everything on campus is within a 10-minute walk. During the winter, it can get cold, but no one has frozen to death walking to class. For those adventurous intercampus travelers, Carleton has community yellow bikes, old discarded bikes that have been painted bright yellow and given names like “Mello Yello,” “Lance,” and “Darrell Waltrip.” Yellow bikes aren’t always safe—they have rusty chains, loose handlebars, flat tires, and are usually lacking in the brake department. In fact, yellow bikes have been known to cause hospital visits (the bikes are only partly to blame; alcohol might have come in to play). Traveling by yellow bike isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s quite an adventure if you want to give it a go.

Forget the campus shuttle to the Twin Cities, make friends with people with cars, or get a job and a car. Around town? Northfield is like all of five blocks.

It’s very easy to get around Northfield because it’s not very big and you can walk anywhere that you’d like to go, which is nice. It’s harder to get to the Twin Cities, though there are buses, right? I’ve only taken them a couple of times because it’s kind of a hassle and you can’t come back really, really late at night. It’s much easier if you have a car. Many people seem to have cars, which you can persuade them to use, which is a nice community-building exercise, I find.

Public transportation is nonexistent unless you want to go to St. Olaf. Northfield isn’t big, though, so you can walk. Transportation to the Twin Cities is an absolute embarrassment. It would be easier to hijack a farmer’s donkey and ride it there than to take a bus.

Public transportation sucks, but it’s largely unnecessary. Most of what the town has to offer is within walking distance of campus and there are buses between Carleton and St. Olaf. Getting to the Twin Cities without a car, however, is a hassle.

It’s easy to get around Northfield (a grocery store and a coffee shop are within walking distance). Not so hard but ridiculously expensive to get to the Twin Cities.
