Facts

Tips for Getting In
  • Apply to H&SS if you don't think you'll get in—it's easier to get into and you can switch schools.
  • Be well rounded. Even if you intend to study outside of math and science—do well in all subjects.
  • Depth versus breadth—it's better to be deeply involved in a few extracurriculars versus every club at your school.
  • Don't apply Early Decision if you're not completely committed.
  • Express passion in what you intend to study.
  • GPA isn't as big of a deal in comparison with other schools at this level.
  • Have activities outside of school that you are committed to.
  • Research on the website to be specific in your "Why CMU" essay.
  • Take a tour or do a Sleeping Bag Weekend.
  • Take APs, but don't expect to get credit for them.
  • Write an honest application essay—they get enough where they can spot embellishment a mile away.
