Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

All but the most optimistic students have problems with campus dining. Fixing the dining situation is a big problem for the University, and an even bigger hassle for the students—campus dining consists of individual campus-run restaurants rather than large, central dining halls. The meal plan provides you with two ways to pay: by blocks or DineXtra. A block is a unit of credit that’s good for one whole meal. The other way to pay, DineXtra, works like cash; it can be used at all dining services locations, as well as four off-campus restaurants. The average meal will cost about $7. Freshmen are required to be on the meal plan, and most are unhappy with it. Fortunately, students can structure their meal plan to provide themselves with the most flexibility by choosing how much money to allot to block units and how much money to allot to DineXtra.

The most disappointing thing about eating on campus is the high price for little food. The food isn’t all bad. A dining hall would be nice, but the lack of one means that CMU students don’t have to suffer through cafeteria-style food. Asiana, Taste of India and Si Señor offer some delicious dishes, as well as add some cultural flair to an otherwise boring menu. For freshman year, the meal plan is bearable, but after that, most students stay off campus when grabbing a bite to eat.

Lots of Variety...At First

When you first get to CMU, you're overwhelmed by choices of eating venues, but as the semester wears on the food quality generally starts seeming worse and worse and you really do just get bored...but compared to other schools it's not bad.

Carnegie Mellon Does Not Care About Its Dining.

The food at CMU is sick joke. Not much more that can be said about that.

The meal plan is mandatory freshman year, but after the first year most students drop the meal plan.

Decent.

The great thing is, CMU has lots of different, "restaurant-style" eateries, so if you get tired of one place, you can eat at a different location. It's not like one central dining hall that gets old after a while, but one full semester of only-campus food can drive anyone nuts.

Special Options Many students choose to eat at privately-owned trucks parked next to the athletic fields. These trucks offer Chinese, Thai, Mediterranean, Mexican, and Indian food at a low price and remain to be one of the most popular options around campus.
Did You Know?

Ever go traying? When it snows, CMU kids will steal the cafeteria trays and use them to go sled riding on the hills behind Donner Hall and in Schenley Park.
