Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most outsiders are a little cautious of Greek life, but fraternity and sorority members share a proud allegiance to their organizations. The social scene at Carnegie Mellon is different from most other colleges. While it’s true that frat parties make up a large percentage of the partying that takes place on and off campus, these events are never really big deals for non-Greek students. The influence that fraternities have on non-Greek students is a passive one, but the frat scene is popular for freshmen to explore even if they don’t join. With the Morewood Gardens, New House, and Mudge dorms right next to the frat quad, freshmen have easy access to Panhellenic debauchery.

Students interested in the brotherhood or sisterhood that Greek life offers can find it at CMU. Orientation week is a good time to frequent frat parties and find out if going Greek is something you’d be interested in. Only around 15 percent of students go Greek, so there’s really no pressure to join, and it does not signal the end of your social life at CMU. The sororities don’t really throw any parties, but naturally, girls can go to whatever frat party they want, no questions asked. A number of Pitt girls actually come up to CMU because the frats are cleaner and safer than the ones at Pitt. Guys who aren’t brothers may have a little more trouble getting in, but it’s not impossible especially if you have friends who can get you on the guest list.

Present but Not Everything

Frats are definitely fun to go to because they provide for some of the parties but greek life does not take over campus. However, it can really establish a set group of friends with similar interests if you join! The status is definitely not everything, it won't make you or break you.

Greek Life

Our school is known to be one of the most stressfull univerisites in the nation because of the incredible amount of load work the university puts on its students. And because of this Greek Life is not often looked upon positively by the non-Greeks, since it is nearly impossible to have the life of partying, and constantly going to events while having to do internships/volunteer work and keeping up with the school work to bring up the GPA.

Good but not essential

Greek life is a moderate-sized presence at CM. We have a pretty strong system that you can join, but it won't kill your social life if you don't. It can help you with networking and finding fun but it's not a necessary component to life here.
