Birth Control Available? Yes
Students complain about the prices, but the fact of the matter is that CMU Health Services offers pretty much anything in the area of birth control. Most male condoms are 25 cents, unless you need the extra-large variety—those you'll have to splurge at 50 cents. They even have female condoms, available for $1.50, although most girls at CMU stick to the pill, which can be prescribed by appointment. In case you are ever in need of a quick fix, both Health Services and the Rite Aid up the road sell emergency contraception, also known as the morning-after pill.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At CMU, it is very important to become familiar with something called, "CMU goggles." Similar to beer goggles, the longer you wear your CMU goggles, the more attractive the campus becomes. Obviously, these are not literal "goggles"; however, the longer students are at CMU, the more frequent that a 5 or 6 in the outside world becomes an 8 or 9 (usually if people would describe someone as a 10, they really are—there's no hiding hotness like that). The reasons for these goggles are varied. Some would say it's because you get used to the people and decide that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. However, most are pretty optimistic about their fellow students. CMU goggles exist for most students because they have just come to know the people behind the looks. Students agree that everyone here is driven, talented, and intelligent, and a large portion are truly friendly and outgoing—you'll find that the looks don't matter as much after a few years.

This is not to say that CMU is a campus of ogres. The typical response is that there are some hot guys and equally hot girls, but most of the campus is pretty average looking. It is probably because students would first describe themselves as "nerds" before describing themselves as "sexy" people. Assuming you've seen enough teen movies and TV shows, though, nerds aren't always that bad. Like any other campus, CMU has its fair share of people who turn heads in a not-so-good way. It is probably because these cape-wearing, vampire-teeth-donning, singing-out-loud-by-themselves students are just so far out of the norm, that CMU has garnered a reputation for weirdos. It's really not that bad—it is what makes CMU unique—and students will often conclude by telling you that there is someone for everyone.

Students @ CMU

We're a school of nerds, but we don't all look like it. Everyone at this school, for the most part, is extremely intelligent. It's not like a normal university: sadly, stereotypically, not everyone is necessarily model-pretty. Besides looks, everyone here is generally very nice. Every time I've lost something, someone has picked it up and returned it to lost and found, or will go as far as finding your email and letting you know that they found something you lost. There have only been minor thefts, but that's been from leaving items out in the open in public areas, which is pretty much a stupid thing to do. General summary: nice, smart, people.

Passionate People Everywhere

To be honest, not everyone is as concerned with their looks as you might find elsewhere but that doesn't mean the students here are unattractive by any means. Each student's interests tend to revolve around their major since academics consume most of their time but close to 90% of students make time for friends, clubs, activities so the social life here is really underrated.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

Among the many different types of students at Carnegie Mellon, there is always someone outgoing and willing to bring others into the group. While most social circles are clearly defined (you know why someone fits in there), most people aren't confined to hang out with one group of people. You'll find that computer science nerds aren't always shy, and drama nerds aren't always loud and out there. Some social circles are more outgoing as a whole than others; however, they are brought together by common interests, and at the end of the day, if you share an interest, you'll fit right in. Rely on the fact that at Carnegie Mellon everyone is nerdy about something, whether it is Dungeons & Dragons or fashion, so that makes life a bit easier.

Hookups or Relationships?

You'll find that a surprising number of people at CMU are in relationships—both guys and girls. An even more surprising number is the amount of people who are with someone that doesn't go to the school. Keep in mind, though, that it is college, and just because people are in relationships doesn't mean they are long-lasting committed ones. While you'll find that guy or girl who is crazy about "the one," you'll more often find someone who turns casual hookups into casual dating.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Students are so involved in their studies and other activities that it's not surprising for guys and girls to hit it off while studying in the dorms, taking notes in class, or working on extracurricular activities. For students who don't want their romantic life to be too scholastic, there are some good house parties most weekends where singles go in hopes of meeting a significant other. Going to clubs and bars is a good way to meet non-CMU students who are out to have a little fun.

Dress Code

You are allowed to stumble into class wearing sweatpants with your shirt on backwards. While people might stare for a second, weirder things are seen at CMU. This is not a school where you have to dress your New York best every day to class, especially since half of the computer science students tend to spend 72 hours straight in the Gates building. As with any school, there are those who take pride in their appearance, and come to class every day of the semester wearing something different and equally tasteful. But that is not a must. Nights and weekends, however, that changes. Girls take their time getting ready, oftentimes favoring the cutest outfit over dressing for the weather. Guys will don button-downs and actually shave, in preparation for the few hours a week where appearance actually matters at CMU.

Did You Know? Orientation is a major event on campus: While most schools set aside two or three days during the summer, CMU freshmen have an entire week right before the start of school to get to know each other. None of the events are mandatory, but since everyone is new, it's a great way to meet people. Plus, there's an event where you meet everyone in your class—maybe there's a possibility for love at first sight?
