Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although there is crime on and around campus, students are in agreement that they feel secure and not too concerned about their safety. Campus initiatives like Safe Walk and the escort van service have really helped students feel safer. Two police cars and one supervisor patrol the campus 24 hours a day. Dorm security, however, is very lax. Quickly Flashing a student ID at the entrance to any dorm is enough to get a student, all his friends, and that garbage bag filled with beer that he’s holding into the building. Recent efforts to monitor who comes in and out of the dorms have been largely unsuccessful, due to the fact that the desk attendant position is student-run. Complaints about bikes are well-founded, too. It is very common to see the dismembered handlebars and spokes of bikes that have been destroyed still chained to the rack. Whoever has a passion for destroying these bikes is still pretty much a mystery.

The CMU police should also be commended for maintaining a highly visible presence and giving the campus such a safe feel. Because of the campus’ polished, professional atmosphere, it’s easy to forget that walking just a few blocks off campus could possibly put you in a much worse area. However, while there aren’t many instances of crime by students, it goes without saying that valuables, such as laptops, left unprotected run a high risk of being stolen.

Pretty Safe

I've never really felt unsafe on campus. We get few crime reports, and there are plenty of options for walking home at night, etc. There are occasional busts for drugs/alcohol in dorms, especially freshmen dorms, but if you're smart you're fine.

Saftey

I have never felt unsafe on campus, even at three in the morning. There are always campus police patrolling, so help is always close. Also, you need a campus ID to get into any of the dorm rooms, so uninvited guests are not a problem. (24 hours)
