CMU is generous with US students, but it gives no financial aid to international students.

Decent

I received plenty of financial aid, without it I would not have attended CMU. It is a pricey school but what you get out of it is totally worth it.

Money Is Confusing

The financial aid office is helpful as long as you go and know exactly what questions you need answered. Walk-ins during normal business hours are fine. Student Accounts are entirely managed online, and sometimes the way things are posted on top of each other in a list fashion makes it confusing to figure out how much money is available or what the student owes the school and for what reasons.

Advice on Financial Aid

Carnegie scholarships are awarded to students when they apply as freshmen and are renewable throughout undergraduate studies. That's why it's a good idea to figure out if Carnegie Mellon is the right school as a freshman because there is a greater chance of receiving free aid versus loans. Many students who receive any type of financial aid are also eligible for a federal work-study. Work-study jobs are all around campus and not hard to find. The best ones are the desk jobs in the University Center. While students who work at the campus project The Waffle Shop love it, it is extremely far from campus. Submit applications early: To be considered for financial aid, it is a good idea to get the FAFSA and College Board's CSS Profile in by the priority deadline or soon afterward.
